I couldn't agree more! The appropriate honorifics is "Mr." like you suggested since they are in no way related by blood. Nigerians are always known to overdo things (especially Yorubas, I'm Yoruba by the way). Funny thing is, if a 10 year old child calls him Richard in the US he'll be all smiles and cool with it.

The real respect is the reaction your name evokes based on one's past achievement. I'm pretty sure he has done well in this regard, and I could not for the life of me understand why "uncle" honorifics makes him sleep better at night.
