Good day all. Forgive me if it's a silly topic bit I really have no clue where to start from

I noticed that my son is really good at computer games and is quite inquisitive as to how they work. I downloaded some basic coding games for kids for him and he has mastered them and is now bored with them.

I know he needs to learn more to maintain the interest. I don't know where to start. He has consistently won Best in ICT in his class and he is only 5. Is there something I can do to keep him engaged in it during this long vacation? I am out of ideas.

if he is only 5 and you think he's a genius, teach him C and Linux Kernel Programming......

.
But on a more serious note, teach him python (pygame) or QBasic.

It's not about being a genius it's about catching them early. He seems more inclined towards that and I want to build on the interest.

I don't know how others started. Trying to do my own bit.

Thanks for noticing what your child is good at and giving him an opportunity(most naija parents wont do this)..
Facebook launched a website to teach children in africa coding in an easy way , but i have forgotten the website, if u can find that website and register him in that program it will be good(as he might be given scholarship).

Can you bring your child to cchub summer of code
The Summer of Code is a 4 week fun, interactive programme to introduce children aged 5-18 years to computer programming. Through the Summer of Code children learn to design games and animations using Scratch, design websites using HTML and CSS as well as get introduced to programming computer apps and electronics.

Nice one.....Good job mama smiley

Infact, seems like a lot of parents are now looking at getting their kids acquire deeper IT & tech. skills. I've heard at least nothing less than 10 of my friends & colleagues talk about enrolling their kids into some programming or coding class this summer.... Catch them young!!! There are a couple of such programs around and I know there's one going on somewhere in Lekki & another around Mega plaza....I saw the flyers sometime just can't remember now...pele!

I think you can also use google to help you locate such trainings close to you. We have to encourage & stir these kids interests from young. The world is moving at a very fast pace these days, and we can't allow for our kids to be left behind regardless of being in Africa.

Hy, its good to know you discovered your son's interest in tech.
If this has been done to be, i wonder where i could have been now.

I started programming back then in 2012 when i was 12/13 years without the backup of any one. I struggled to be what i am today because my parents had no much interest in tech and is bent in their teaching work.

With the help of God i striggled through many challenges especially getting access to a computer and the internet connectivity which is still a majoy barriar to me now.

But by God's grace am 17 now and already have about 4-5 years of experiences in different programming languages and have acquired alot of programming skills which makes me outstanding in the midst of my mate despite all challenges.

So am glad you noticd you son's interest in the tech world earlier and would love to help as i love inquisitive children and wonder why people dont recognize programming in Nigeria.

In the Britian, it was recently made mandatory that schools teach programming to children but here the reverse is the case. Imagine with all my skill, University still denies me access to study Computer Science. So apolying! Whereas my friends that beg to drink from my fountain of knowledge are the in schools with no interest in it.

You can contact me via echimaobi5@gmail.com president@syconlabs.com . (The former prefered!) for advice in any way i can help.

I believe that if i can achieve such a huge success with little or no care and support and not starting early enough, your son can do even far better if well structured and brought up in the field. I currently program in over 5 languages with little knowledges in many others (willing to be a hardcore programmer) but with the help you are gonna give your son, hope he will do better.

Your son is amazing. There are several kids nowadays with strong interest in computing and technology and what we must do is to properly channel those interest and passion to skills that will lead to career.

Early Code is one of such institutions that train kids in coding and help them to acquire the skills that they need and also guide them to different career paths that can be found from computer programming (coding).

Visit www.earlycode.net to find out how they can help you son.
