I Am About Making A Decision That Would Cost Me My I.T Placement: Advice by Chiscomax(m): 6:10am On Aug 06, 2016
I got a placement on the Last week of June, 2016 for my industrial training having completed 3years and a semester of Mechanical Engineering in a prominent Federal University. The I.T placement I got happen to be a project which I believe a lot of money is involved in( this is not my concern anyway).

I have worked with them through some mechanical stages until the site engineer insisted I work with him on electrical engineering jobs which I had to join him because he is a senior colleague after all. 3weeks into the electrical job it started to occur to me that I am;
1. Not gaining mechanical Experience
2. I am being used for most of the work(electrical) by this site engineer since I happen to learn fast and do more than my other colleagues even when they are getting paid and I am not and it is going to 2 months now

I have discussed the issue with the site manager and he promised to talk to the site engineer which I am not certain of he did.

I am fed of everything and the training is becoming frustrating since I am neither Learning what I came for nor getting any pay for doing electrical jobs.

I intend meeting the site manager on Monday to quit if they insist I do the electrical jobs which hectic and comes along side with other mini jobs like digging to lay Cables, climbing of tanks. Please I need your advice

This is a serious issue but lalasticlala will just ignore it because there is no 'cleavage bearing' or 'snakes' in it.

I have nothing to advice but I believe other NAiralanders have something to say

endure bro....everything is a lesson....focus on anything u are being told to do...u are an mechanical student doesnt mean u cant knw anytjing about electrical...

i will advice u to keep on enduring. I.T wont last forever and u dont even know where you will find ursef after school.

i am a chemistry student and i did my I.T in a pure water industry...i was meant to learn things about chemistry of water but things changed when i got there.

i learnt the chemistry of water and all the machines involved in producing bottled water.

when the owner scaked most of his worker, he said i should stay behing and i was the head of production line for more than 20mnths. i got paid for 40k tho.

just endure and do anything u are being told to do

Make your feelings known n try to get paid but don't quit.....

In this economy no skill learnt is ever wasted....

Besides it's I.T doesn't last for ever.....

It's better u have something like your skill and not use it than to need something and not have it.....

Remember that....

OP,,, endurance is the key,,,,I had similar experience during my I.T,tho am an agricultural Engineer,as a matter of fact, the casual workers were sacked when I was there,so me and a guy who is also an I.T student do their jobs, washing tanks, dosing chemicals in the water etc. i even fought with my supervisor on top washing of tank cos it's break time,i haven't eaten and he insist we finish washing tank bfor going to eat,I don't even go for break attimes,,,,but I gained experience using the chemicals cos we eventually did a course which is related to it during my final year,,,so op endure,,no knowledge is a waste,,u might eventually come across wat u r doing in d long run,,,u r an I.T student,u don't need to complain,u ave limited time to spend dere nd gather experience which u cannot in class..cheers

I'll advise u as a little brother...you are too young as an IT student to start comparing yourself with the staff. As an IT u are there to learn and not earn...any money u earn is just a bonus. More importantly I've come to realise that no knowledge is wasted...u may be surprised that this experience may help you in an interview tomorrow cos employers want people with the most diverse knowledge.

wish u the best as u decide wisely

Op, i was exactly in your shoes...am a mechanical.engr student.
Did my siwes in a big company in which i worked myself out(both in the mechanical and electrical departments, i even did some menial jobs sef)..

At first i thought i was just working in vain and was about to quit...
Just i was planning how i would write my resignation letter grin, the production manager himself came to me and acknowledged my good works,...after everything i was paid 70k after d training with a promise of easy employment whenever am done with school...

I advise u to endure...it might just b a blessing in disguise

I don't understand why young people are always in a hurry, particularly when it comes to making money via their profession. The industrial training period is exactly what it says, industrial training. In other countries, are you aware that they don't even pay students during IT? Why not just focus and learn all you can during this period. Remember, the knowledge you gain now can still come in useful to you in the future. Just calm down and learn.
