I might be able to answer some of the questions here. The warning is primarily directed at state governments. State governments own land (according to the land use act) and they are the ones that are expected to establish displaced people's camps. NEMA only manages disasters, while the state governments are supposed to act to prevent disasters. NEMA is making the warning public so that members of the public won't say that they did not warn the state governments. For example, Lagos State has already started moving people to its flood camp at Igando. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/lagos-is-prepared-for-impending-flood-lasema-operations-boss/ |

Femich18:And when shot hits the fan, they'd all call the government as useless. I also think the government and NEMA should execute a forced evacuation using the military. Better people complain about forced evacuation than Nigeria burying hundreds of women and children again. We have buried too many friends and families recently |

What caused the 2012 flood was not too much rainfall in the upper Niger basin, but too much rainfall in the River Benue watershed. |

This flooding which is a natural occurance happens every year . Is there no way we can use this to our benefit? Channel the excess water to deforested areas or create a seasonal dam that uses the heavy flow to generate electricity? Na so so NEMA warning every year ...y not use it to our advantage. We need to start thinking outside the box. |

This is supposed to be a wake up call for a good government in both Local, State and Federal levels, as it was in the Western world, but the Nigerian case is totally different. First of all there are no plan in place to evacuate people, or no enough equipment to use if such thing happens, God forbid though. What I'm trying to say is that corruption won't allow these fricking leaders to do the right thing, may God in his infinity mercies help the less privileged. |
