I wanted to write about a recent phenomenon currently going on regarding the status of Nigerian languages in WAEC. I took the WASSCE in 2006 and during my time it was compulsory to take a major Nigerian language, especially if you were from any of the 3 major ethnic groups. Schools in the South East made Igbo language compulsory for all their students, schools in the South West and North also respectively. Back then, schools or students from minority tribes were often exempted from this requirement and taking a Nigerian subject was voluntary. As a child I was raised with English language and I can't be thankful enough for taking the Igbo language in secondary school, where I learned how to read and write the language fluently, which has stayed with me till today. Same for my siblings as well.

However, since the release of WAEC results this year, I have noticed the results of so many people without any Nigerian languages included in them. My question now is, are Nigerian languages no longer compulsory in WASSCE? Are they now optional? Are schools in the 3 major speaking areas no longer mandated to offer Nigerian languages to their students? What then does this make of the status of Nigerian languages if students are allowed to choose if they wanted to take a Nigerian language or not and majority decide not to take any Nigerian language?

In all honesty, this is not right at all.

You have to understand this is exactly what the British planned to achieve throughout their colonies in Africa and beyond. They installed a brainwashing education to make us consider anything African, including our languages as inferior.

Therefore, it is the system of education itself that's undermining our native languages.

Again, the original purpose of western education was to school Africans to become educated imbeciles who will help kill African languages and extol English and French. This was a strategic long term goal, so what you've noticed in the WAEC results today is the result of many years slavery. Indeed, we are now educated fools helping kill our languages!.

This's why the founding father of African independence, Lord Kwame Nkrumah said ''western education is a fraud''.
