I am not chasing personal glory at Olympics – EteboBy Ifreke Inyang

Oghenekaro Etebo has insisted he is not after personal glory and is only interested in leading Nigeria to winning gold in men’s football at the Olympic Games.

The Portugal-based forward was in fantastic form, scoring four goals as the Dream Team VI defeated Japan 5-4 in their first game on Friday.

“Scoring all the goals in this competition and not winning the gold medal would have amounted to a waste of effort and that’s not my target,” Etebo told NFF website.

“Yes, it would be great to see my efforts contributing to the success of the team, but if it will not lead us to the gold, then I don’t want it.”

Etebo is the first African to score four goals in a football match at the Olympics.

Team Nigeria has been ranked 7th most successful African nation at the Olympics.

This was confirmed ahead of the official opening ceremony of this year’s Games in Rio, Brazil, according to a list compiled by BBC Africa.

Team Nigeria have won three gold, eight silver and 12 bronze medals.

Kenya are the most successful African country with 25 gold, 32 silver and 29 bronze medals.

Other nations in the Top 10 are South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Cameroon.

Team Nigeria’s first ever medal at the Olympics was in Tokyo 1964, when Nojeem Maiyegun won bronze in boxing.

Senate to investigate Dream Team VI’s travel delay

By Ifreke Inyang

Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said that they will investigate the circumstances behind the delayed departure of the U-23 team to the 2016 Olympic Games.

Samson Siasia and his boys were initially scheduled to leave their training camp in Atlanta, USA for Brazil on Monday, but only left few hours before their opening Group B game against Japan.

“Congratulations to the #Dream Team for the 5-4 win against Japan#Rio 2016. #Thank you Delta for making it possible for them to make the match,” Saraki wrote on his Twitter handle.

“Senate Committee on sports chaired by Senator Obinnna Ogba will look into the embarrassing situation that happened to the Dream Team V1.

“When minister of finance appeared in the senate three weeks ago, we raised the issue and she assured funds were released.”

Nigeria beat Japan 5-4 and will take on Sweden in their next game on Sunday.

Nigeria vs Sweden: Dream Team VI target quarter final berth
By Aanu Adeoye
Aug 7, 2016 12:53:40

Samson Siasia’s team are hoping to earn a place in the last eight of the Rio Games when they meet the European champions on Sunday night.

Nigeria continue their campaign in the football event of the Olympics with a tough encounter against Sweden at the Amazon Arena in Manaus.

The Dream Team VI’s preparation for their Group B opener was far from ideal due to multiple flight delays that meant they arrived in Manaus just hours before kick-off.

With a win under their belt and adequate rest following the topsy-turvy events, Siasia’s side an uphill against the European champions.

Sweden opened their Rio 2016 account with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Colombia, and coach Ericson Hakan’s men will be all out for victory that would put them in the driving seat for quarter-final qualification.

The Blagult with captain Astrit Ajdarevic, Alexander Milosevic and Mersin Idmanyurdu have enough experience to worry a Nigeria side that showed deficiencies in defence in their nine-goal encounter with Japan.

Nigeria can however rely on four-goal hero Oghenekaro Etebo Umar Sadiq to secure maximum points.

With the experienced John Mikel Obi in the middle, Samson Siasia’s side possess a significant advantage that should stand them in good stead against the technically gifted Swedes.

The good thing about Rohr is that he does not need the money. He owns a hotel in france or so. He simply wants to work.

One commentator on twitter who knows him well was wondering why he will want to come to Nigeria given our record with coaches.

He owns a hotel? I hope he doesn't operate a casino in the hotel. He could be tainted and be working underground for one of those betting syndicates... Lol
Don't mind me, was just being cheeky grin

Much better performance. Inspired performance by the Swedish keeper. They seemed to get tired at the end. Defence was better composed.

FT: Japan 2-2 Colombia

Congrats to the Dream Team for winning the group! It is also the 2nd time that a Siasia-coached Dream team would win an Olympic group, following their feat in 2008. And we all know what happened next....
