It happens all the time. You just have to be respectful to them, be friendly and polite. Try speaking your native language if possible or pigin. When asked to give them some tip ( if young, claim you are an student who has spent all his money and have nothing left; Same if you aren't. Mention the fact you've had to give money away ( which I don't think would be a lie, because well you are in Nigeria). They tend to respect you alot for it. The SiR/MA makes them feel appreciated and thus might even make them upgrade you to a better sit on the plane. Happened to me before.

The police might ask that you tender the licence at a Police station later if you have committed an offence. Your name and date of birth can be used to ascertain whether or not you have a licence to drive.

This is Nigeria and we should follow the law that works here which states that you must have your driving licence at all time

We all know the ultimate target of the police officer is to get some cash off him, not like he takes the job seriously. However, the guy didn't have his license, nor the temporary issued, pending time for collection of the original. The police officer has the right to issue him a fine.

Who amongst those badmouthing the officer, would ever step foot into America or Europe and confidently drive without a license? We shouldn't give them free pass, just because they have a foreign accent. Do what is right.

The man didn't say he did not have a licence, he said he didn't have the licence on him. You talk about Europe, it's not a requirement to have a licence on your person when driving in Europe, you can tender it at a later date.

If he was in California and he told the police he didn't have a license, he would have been told to exit the car and it would have been towed and he would be arrested.

In Lagos, you're given a temporary license the same day you take photos. the official hard copy license is ready about a month later. So if he arrived a month ago, he should at least have is temporary license which is just a laminated piece of paper that look exactly like the hard copy license.

This is not harassment.

Being pulled over on Lagos-Ibadan express by customs officials demanding to see customs papers for your car is harassment. And while he pulls you over he says, " I too want to be a big boy".

There was no harassment here , the least the clown would have done is to show his California drivers license, "abi e no get " instead of calling Chi Chi , In California he would be arrested and his Vehicle either impounded or a friend/relative has to come get it ....in this case we get to free our Police i beg !!!

I'm California all they had to do is get his social security number or run his plate to ascertain his identity. And pple don't get stopped irrationally. The police guy was rambling from hemp to license.

I live in the U.S., Maryland to be precise and you dare not drive without your license. If you don't have your license what other form of government issued ID will you show?

Hence hemp is still not legalized in nigeria, is still part of their job to bring to book anyone caught with it.

In Nigeria you can never apply for your Driver's licence and receive it that same day but you will be issued with a temporal laminated driver's licence that same day after you've been captured (after your passport must have been taken).
That is what the police expected the californian returnee to possess before taking to the roads.

Bravo to Nigerian Police...They did their job and there was no place in the video that they asked for bribe.It is only in Nigeria that we think that if you are stopped by a policeman,he will ask you for money...For people that have had the priviledge of travelling out of Nigeria ,is it the same way you address the Policemen over there that you do here?Everybody wants to be appreciated,even if all your particulars are correct ,a Nigeria Policeman can still delay you,but if approached courteously and with respect ,even if you don't have the full papers they can still leave you and tell you make sure you have it on you when next you are driving...Can the man in the video drive without a valid Licence in California?In California that he is coming from ,if he is stopped by the police and they have a sniffer dog with them and the dog smells Marijuana,the man will be pulled over and his car will be properly searched and if any trace of marijuana is found ,he will be charged and also it is an offence to drive WITHOUT a valid drivers licence.Let us at least give our Policemen due respect,if a Nigerian Policeman have all the necessary equipments and remuneration to perform,they will perform more than any Policeman in the world...I rest my case.

Well, maybe things are done differently over there. In the UK, all they need is your name and date of birth, they can check if you are licenced on the spot. You don't even have to show them an official ID, they can use your bank card to confirm your name.

I find it really hard to believe you... look, the fact that you tendered #50 or what ever amount for free access or to get away from time wasting from the corrupt cops does not make it the real way... No where in the world Nigeria inclusive that u can drive without a licence...
