NIGERIANS SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS OVER CALLS FOR RESTRUCTURING —BABALOLA

AUGUST 09, 2016 / : OLUWOLE IGE - OSOGBO

Against the backdrop of divergent views over the calls for the restructuring of the country, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC),  in Osun state, Elder Peter Adebayo Babalola, on Sunday urged Nigerians to be cautious in handling the persistent agitation for the restructuring of the country by some ethnic nationalities and individuals.

He expressed fear that any idea of restructuring that will lead to disintegration of the country would not at the long run benefit groups and individuals that are calling for such move.

Speaking during a chat with the Nigerian Tribune, Babalola  the APC threw his weight behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s position that what the country needs is development and not restructuring.

He contended that with the present disciplined leadership, Nigeria is on the path to fulfilling her potentials, just as he described those pushing for restructuring as the only way out of the crisis in the Niger Delta Region as “first suspects in the overt moves to sabotage economy of the country by the militants”.

According to Babalola “with my experience in the maritime sector and my understanding of politics behind call for restructuring of the country, I safely conclude that what the country needs most at the moment is leadership and that has been given to it”.

“Having got that, all we need to do now is to cooperate with the man in the saddle, President Buhari, regardless our party affiliations, background or religion. This is key because, if Buhari succeeds, Nigeria is the major beneficiary. Should the contrary happen, major casualties will be Nigeria and her people”, the statement added.

While commenting on governance in Osun State, Babalola implored  all people of goodwill to pray for the success of Governor Rauf Aregbesola for him to be able to implement all his programmes before exiting office.

“He is the symbol of our party. All I am interested in is to see him successfully implementing all his programmes. The administration is on the right path and we hope to keep up the pace of development for the benefit of Osun people”.

Some times I wonder if these old men have exhausted their brain..

Nigeria needs to be restructured so that all state will sit up and fend for itself, why would asking a brother to stop lazying around bring disintegration if not that he has decided to be a Lazy axx..

I am sure the re-introduction of WAI is part of the development..

End time Restavèk...

How do u restructure when 27 states are unable to pay salaries, u still depend on fg to provide almost everything with near zero IGR.

This is definitely not the time for any restructuring. States like bayelsa, ekiti and kogi will just crumble. And who will suffer the most? Nigerian citizens!

Yes. Until we are able to navigate out of this economic nightmare. Restructuring is good, but not at the moment. Imagine what will happen if fg stops all allocation this month

so are you trying to tell me that Buhari, APC & Tinubu specifically don't know much about restructuring because I could remember vividly that it's one of the campaign points they used on people last year?? So are you suggesting we should not hold them accountable to their words or for deceiving the masses??

Afonja. Is it when the allocations stop coming entirely will be the good time to restructure ?

Lazy Afonjas that know they are vound to perish without allocations, reason they become agile and well to do once Biafra is mentioned. Just not to return to Togo status quo with their brothers there.

Restructuring is not immediate or expected to be carried out in one fell swoop. The terms must be spelt out, areas for devolution of powers will be clearly stated; a blueprint for phased autonomy and adjustment will be allowed within which time those non viable states in their various regions will have to chart their course for survival.

Forward looking Nigerians cannot keep being dragged backwards n bogged down by d weight of non performing states. It is time to deal a blow of reality to underperforming states and regions!

The entire process requires a new constitution which should even spell out procedures for rotational presidency and leadership of d regions so there is no fear of any apparatus being hijacked. While all of these are going on, d focus of d country will naturally change because allocations must necessarily be deployed towards capita n projects for self development.

Most important however is for the atmosphere for a national discourse to be open and let the process begin in earnest. For as long as no effort is being made towards a new outlook n direction, evil will continue to thrive. In other words, the process needs to start urgently! It shouldn't be foreclosed by obtuse n myopic reasoning such as d kind expressed by Buhari and his Vice. The real diversification we need can only be executed through this means.

OK, let's agree we can't restructure Nigeria as things are now......
but it's imperative we establish the template for restructuring and work towards it soonest.
this feeding bottle system of unitary govt is what is killing us....
no serious country practice it, it kills development n promotes mental apathy.......
the job of a Nigerian governor is the laziest job I've ever seen in my life........
u don't have to do anything, but wait for monthly allocation every month end......
tell me, why do u want such gov. to bother about IGR or embark on any meaningful state development.

tell me why a state like oyo state with its huge land mass and viable agricultural potential will be struggling to pay salary, if not lack of vision n insight from its leaders.

Ondo state is the richest state in South west when it comes to natural resources n cash crops, yet it's overall performance is abysmal.

the north has what it takes to feed this nation and even earn foreign exchange via food export......

nnewi-aba axis has what it takes to replicate guandong miracle in Nigeria churning out affordable n quality household products for the whole of sub-sahara Africa.

the Bible says, whosoever do not work, should not eat. it's high time we apply that rule to Nigeria and her states.

whether we like or not, restructuring is coming.....
it's either we restructure Nigeria or Nigeria restructure itself.

Nigeria doesn't belong to APC. She belongs to SDP, PPP, UPN, PDP, APC etc. No one is restructuring for APC or for PMB Nigeria is calling for restructuring because PMB is not measuring up to standard. He is misdirecting Nigeria, making lopsided appointments, cannot control Bokoharam, Fulani Herdsmen, Niger Delta Avengers and the troubles now brewing in Niger State. Restructuring is meant to improve the essence of general governance, give more Powers to States over their lands and resources and make them contribute uniformly to FG.

Those 27 States can't pay salaries because the FG and the Politicians are mismanaging Federal Funds. When you restructure, the 27 will economically fit in properly and peacefully into the six zoned fully autonomous structure.

that is the point..i ask how else can our economy be diversified if a restructuring doesnt take place??...how then can jobs be created and our gdp increased??...

immunity should also be removed from our useless governors so that they perform and make money for their respective states rather than junket to abuja every now and then to pay homage to one president...
