Why is there not a single Ijaw competing in aquatics at the olympics? Each and everytime, we are inundated with tales of how superhuman Ijaws are when it comes to anything that has to do with water, why are we not seeing it being showcased to the world..

There are 6 different events, Swimming, Diving, Sychronised Swimming, Synchronized diving, Rowing and Open water swimming.. There is rowing, and water polo as well with over 50 gold medals up for grabs..50 opportunities for grace and GLORY.. Not one taker!!

Despite the natural talent the good Lord bestowed on the Ijaws, not one is harnessing it..Not a single soul is driven by passion or a desire to see his/her emblazoned on the world stage... Not one is driven to test him/herself against the world..

Excuse No 1... You have oil underneath the soil of the land you call home and yours but so does Iran,Saudi, Qatar, Angola, UAE and they are at the olympics, even if you get 100% resource control, will everyone have access to it?

Excuse No 2, Government nor dey support anybody..
True but it is only at the beggining.. As horrible as this country is , when they see medal potential, they are revved up from their lethargy, No one can say Blessing Okagbare is having a picnic with the sports ministry but she's letting her work and drive make a way for her...

Coco Ukogu has qualified for the 1/4 finals of rowing, she is not even a Nigerian in the real sense but the country is fronting her because she is a medal hopeful.. Even if she doesn't medal, it will raise her profile and create other opportunities for her

Excuse No 3: The Nigerian nation is not nice to the ND, Lie, we had an Ijaw president (who ought to know better and be passionate about aquatic sports) during London 2012 & the two Ijaws that made attempts were withdrawn by the irresponsible suits at the NSC because they were wild card entries and and he didn't move a muscle..... Wild card because they weren't fantastic but if they were so good, nothing would have held them back..

Excuse no 4.. Don't bother , there are scholarships from even ivy league schools for prolific swimmers.... If you are so good, compete in trials, opportunity will come...

Please install a non Yoruba governor in Lagos, appoint the iyaloja, when it's Christmas, spend it in Lagos, host your relatives for your traditional wedding in Lagos and if any of your aged relatives kick the bucket today, bury them in Lagos....

Also, when you get Bia Bia Utopia, annex lagos and make it the capital .. Happy now? Yeyenatu.

Why would the Ijaws want to represent Nigeria in any sports? Would Ijaws want to be part of Nigeria if they had a choice? That's the question you need to ask. Personally, I think that Ijaws as a people and a nation would have been a much richer nation if Lord Lugard had not made them part of Nigeria. Ijaws don't really need Nigeria for anything, if anything, it is Nigeria that needs them.

I know both Mary Onyali and Olusoji Fasuba, neither had government support till they made a name for themselves.




It has to do with oil, if not dem for dey blow for water sports, they have the potential, they just refuse to explore that option and also aren't putting in their best, IMHO.

These would have been good questions if prompted by a genuine desire to know order than trying to justify some preconceived notions about the Ijaws that you latch onto. When you have a theif lurking around your house to dispossess you of your belongings will you leave your house and go far away without securing your house properly? If the oil found in their own backyard was not everything and not so important as you are alluding, why does your president value it more than the lives of your people killed by the fulanis? How much interest does he show when lives are lost and the response interval compared to a threat to the oil that you think the Ijaws should not be so concerned about? So many things are wrong in this country and as someone who is not from the Niger Delta, especially an Ijaw, who lives off the resources of the Ijaws, it will be difficult for you to understand the psychological implications of being a host without appreciation. As for the oil producing angle, don't Saudi, UAE, Venezuela,Angola, Iran etc also have oil? Why are they at the games?

Ordinary football and athletics, Nigeria cannot effectively manage.... Football team was struck in the U.S ....athlethes were crying for food..... Nigeria cannot manage existing sports....

You now want to add swimming and diving to it.... Are you aware the rowing girl chierika sponsored herself to the Olympics? If you add water sports to Nigerian sports list, will the government be able to fund them when they cant even pay coach salaries?
