Yeah that's true, but with what men and women have seen and experience before marriage, it's not advisable to play prank that would make your partner to have double mind of who you're.

There are many things missing from the story. Normally before concluding of her whereabout. One would ask few questions
1. Ask the Secretary the time the call came in?
2. Have she given such excuse before?
3. Then stylishly call her wife to say hi, and ask about something totally different. Then before dropping the call he'll ask How's the office and work?
And if her number wasn't going through, he should go back home immediately.
But if it happens that she's not at home, he shouldn't panic, he would wait for her return then ask her how was office today? Her response will say it all.

I'll strongly recommend he didn't open up on him looking for her. Until she confess about it.

We all can tell when your partner is telling lies, so it's true he has to calm down and think through.
