I might b wrong but is it everyone that knows how to be self employed..... whether its blogging, programming or agriculture, have we reasoned that some people r actually better in the area of working for others, so even if such ones try to b on their own they ALWAYS FAIL, cos it just aint in them. I might n wrong though |

Nice points you have there Mr. OP but then I don't think engaging in these activities and having a job is mutually exclusive For all I care, you can still have your job and still get to do some of these other activities you mentioned In fact, I think that's the way it should be Your skills set should always complement your job They say no knowledge is a waste I say the more the skill, the more the money making opportunities |

freethinker01:Fail. 'Was' is singular while 'were' is the plural form. The OP is correct. |

benedima:My thoughts too. The tone of the topic is condescending and provocative, at least to discerning people who happen to be unemployed. It is particularly annoying when you consider that most of these types who are smug about being employed got their jobs through the back door - nepotism, connections and such 'man know man' nonsense that is the norm in Nigeria... Not that they are better qualified or more competent than those who they gleefully categorise as "jobless". If you're such a brilliant individual who is confident in his own acumen, then you should never take up paid employment. Go and use your 'brain' and skills to make money yourself. I also need to mention that this "jobless" tag is derogatory if you ask me. The more appropriate word to use is 'unemployed'. |

I tried to do some of this but came to the reality that you must have financial stability first. Therefore, jobless isn't the only clause. You must have an alternative source of income, Parents or guardians sponsorship. |

benedima:I think what op is trying to say is that, rather than waiting for a paid job that is not forthcoming and staying idle, you can still do any of the aforementioned. I know people in paid jobs that do those things. Besides, dont be fooled, paid jobs are not necessarily paying high. I for one don't advise people to stay in a paid job that pays miserable salaries. |

Who is talking about settling for less here? The writer talked about blogging siting linda Ikeji as an example, are you saying that the Op is earning more than Linda Ikeji? You call agriculture settling for less? Go and ask Obasanjo, you call programming settling for less!? Go and ask the guy that programmed Diamond Bank App how much he earns per everyone that makes use of that app. Dude wake up. benedima: |

You nailed it all. The funny thing is that unemployed youth find it difficult to see this golden opportunities. They will rather stay idle at home waiting for govt jobs that aren't in existence. Or spend time praying for miracle when God has already given them the opportunities to be better than the so called white collar jobs. Even though, they want to be employed, starting small is also a problem. |

Good writeup. But on the flip side, most of the things u listed would be more likely if you had a job. It's easy working with your salary, while squeezing out time, than being broke and barely being able to subscibe your data upon expiration. I remember when I was earning over 150k per month. I wanted to start a tutor business, but I would come up with all the silly reasons why I couldn't start. I would draw up an estimate of over 1million that would ensure a seamless and successful launch... Unfortunately company downsized, typical of of most workers, I had no savings. The business I was goin to start for 1m was re_estimated at 50k, and I still didn't hv 50k to start the business. At the end, I had to beg for 10k to start in the most modest of ways. So my advice to working folks with good passive knowledge as the op is: -start your business part-time while still working. If your trade is good, you need just 3 clints then you can quite. But for the jobless, it's better looking for something, even if it's a security work that put change in your pocket. Without this, when you get stucked along the way, trust me nobody will be willing to even recharge ur subscription. |
