Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

The Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, on Wednesday provided horrid details of the events leading to the killing of eight persons in the state.

He said his government would not take lightly the killing, which happened in Talata-Mafara community on Monday.

Yari spoke with State House correspondents shortly after he and his Borno State counterpart, Kashim Shettima, met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Eight people were killed on Monday when a mob set the house of a man ablaze for rescuing an undergraduate that was accused of blasphemy.

He said the incident happened in his hometown.

He said, “The government will not take the issue of people taking the laws into their own hands lightly.

“You cannot say that whoever abused the Prophet should be killed when there is a government in place.

“There are laws and there are courts where Islamic laws are practised in Zamfara. So, why should someone take laws into his hands? Definitely, all the culprits will be brought to book.”

He said although there was no arrest as of the time he left the state, policemen and officials of the Department of State Services were working hard to apprehend the culprits.

The governor said the accusation of blasphemy levelled against the victim was false.

According to him, the intelligence reports available to him showed that it was a case of a fight between two students, which later led to false alarm.

He said, “Intelligence reports from the security agencies indicated that there was a fight between two students, during which one said the other abused Prophet Muhammed.

“Students beat up the other boy, said to be a Yoruba from Kogi State. His religion was, however, in contention.

“They beat him until he collapsed and they thought he was dead. Then security personnel requested help from a shop owner who took him to the hospital in his car.

“When the students heard that the victim was still alive, they went to the hospital, but soldiers intervened. I don’t know if he is alive or dead.

“Then the students returned to the polytechnic and burnt the shop of the man who helped the victim. Unfortunately, the police in the division didn’t have enough men to contain the riot.

“Before reinforcement came, the crowd also burned down the man’s house. Everyone in the house was killed, all of them Muslims, despite the rumour in the social media that Christians were being killed in Zamfara.

“In fact, the mob wanted to go and burn churches and attack non-Muslims, but the security forces stopped them. It is my home town, where I also live.”

How they manage to maim and gruesomely slutter innocent persons without any shred of pity, baffles me.

Islam needs to be banned in this country, it has caused more death than we can number.

And where are their Yoruba supporters?i can't see any one of them condemning this nonsense, they've all gone deaf and dumb. When you keep supporting evil you give it wings to fly and some day it shall come to you and no one will be there to help.Well,I hate celebrating someones misfortune if not I would've said other wise. But I see how this people jubilate when same misfortune befall other tribes in Nigeria. The next thing you will hear them say is respect your host.Hmmmmm!what goes around comes around.

And the guy is even a yoruba, whose people malign Igbos everyday for the fulanis. May God punish any southerner that fights for the yoruba. They made their beds with the hausa/fulani extremists, let them lie on it naked. I will never condemn the killings again as long as a pro-fulani yoruba are involved. Good riddance!

this lying two faced Governor that just stated three weeks ago that anyone who desecrates must face punishment. This evil man is obviously in support of those blood sucking demons.

Eye witnesses have spoken, why should he speak when he didn't witness it?

Yes,there wont be enough reinforcement but if it were southerners, you'll see the police and the army in seconds even if it means to arrest everybody in that vicinity.
The truth is in their hearts they support it as long as it cocerns muha whatever so expect the matter to die.

I guess the new modus operandi in the north is when you get into a fight with someone and you feel you might loose the fight, all you have to do is to scream blasphemy....

Then wait patiently for our "peace" loving brothers from the north to come and defend their religion of "peace" by killing the accused and those that decide to rescue the accused...SMH

This could have attracted more credibility if the same intelligence reports included more specific details like the names of the students and the gangs involved. If every state start killing for God....... Na who go remain undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided........peace indeed is a product of love, acceptance and respect for others and their religion

What happened to the killers of the woman in Kano? The killers of the evangelist in kubwa? Where are they? They can never prosecute their own as long as they perceive that their action is justified.
