•Lawmakers want resolution of environmental issues

BASIC infrastructure must be put in place before oil production can begin in Lagos, the House of Assembly told oil exploration companies yesterday.

Oil has been discovered in commercial quantity in Badagry.

The Assembly said the government needed to prepare before the beginning of operation to avoid a repeat of the problems in Niger Delta and other oil-producing states.

The lawmakers’ reaction followeda motion at plenary by the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Folajimi Mohammed.

The lawmaker said efforts must be made to ensure that the state does not go the way of Niger Delta and other oil producing states, which, he said, were suffering from environmental degradation, following the activities of oil companies.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said there was need for the government to be pro-active on the matter and learn from the past.

He said: “We must safeguard the host communities and we must commend the companies that have been investing in oil exploration in the state over the years before oil was eventually discovered.

“All necessary infrastructures must be put in place to protect the state and the host communities so that we would prevent what is happening in Niger Delta from happening in Lagos State,” he said.

Mohammed in the motion called for a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the socio-economic importance of the exploration of oil and other related issues to prevent the Niger Delta experience.

He stressed that the discovery of oil in Lagos has called for the recognition of the state as an oil-producing state, but that it was important to consider the consequences of the exploration.

After extensive debate of the motion, the House passed a resolution calling for stakeholders meeting over the discovery and exploration of oil in Badagry area.

Some of the stakeholders identified by the lawmakers include exploration companies, state officials and the host communities.

Rotimi Olowo (Somolu 1), made reference to the degradation of Rivers State after the discovery of oil in the state and pointed out that adequate infrastructure should be provided for the people of the area.

He said that despite the fact that Nigerians were happy when oil was initially discovered in the country, it later turned to a source of sadness with the activities of the oil companies.

Supporting, Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti Osa 2) added that a special account should be created for the 13 per cent derivation that would accrue to the state from the Federal Government as an oil producing state.

The lawmaker from Badagry Constituency 2, David Setonji, explained that he received the news of the discovery with mixed feelings.

He expressed fears that the exploration would negatively affect his people and that a percentage of what would accrue to the state from oil revenue should be given to the area.

Another lawmaker from Badagry but who is representing Ojo Constituency 1, Victor Akande, said the oil companies should be made to employ 60 per cent Lagos residents, especially those from Badagry area.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Wasiu Eshinlokun, observed that there was need to learn from the past with the destruction of marine life, environmental pollution and oil spillage in the Niger Delta.

These are the same Yoruba people who joined their masters to killed PIB because it will benefit oil producing communities in Niger Delta. Now oil has been discovered in their domain and they are jittery. God please let the maltreatment, killings, destructions and oppressions they meted on us befall any community in Nigeria where oil is found.

This is interesting and wish lagos state well.

Guys below me are seriously in pain. When has making reference to other states challenge becomes backstabbing? Lagos state is only trying to be proactive and to void future challenges just as what is happening in other states.

So stop this your crocodile tears

I'm very Ok with the salient points raised by our lawmakers especially coming from Hon David Setonji and Hon Victor Akande who are both from Badagry. That shows they have us at heart. They should ensure most of the Workers are from Lagos State especially from Badagry.
Additionally, Lagos is damn rich and doesn't even need that 13% derivation. Why not just let us have the full control of the money for development of our environment.
Make I go dust my C.V and return back home then since home is gonna be sweet now.
God bless Lagos State!
God bless Our Lawmakers!!
God Bless Badagry!!!

These are leaders who care about their people. Is there no House of Assembly in each state of the Niger Delta? What have they said about the activities of the oil companies in their states? Did you miss the part where the House advised how the 13% derivation fund should be spent? Does this not show that the men and women in that Assembly clearly understand why they are there? Put simply, this is a House that is alive to its duties.

Look, most people are aware of the environmental degradation and neglect in the Niger Delta....... and they surely don't support it.

.......... but it's the the outrageous way some of the ND people protest all these by further destroying this same environment, bunkering, proliferation of arms, kidnapping and piracy that's putting sane people off......... makes them appear to just be common criminals hiding under the agitation to commit atrocities.

....... not to mention the NDs criminal leaders that have siphoned all the funds allocated to the region without letting it flow down to the average person there.

The problems of the Niger Delta is still found within it.

Because your leaders don't Care about you doesn't mean the "Wicked wastelanders" leaders shouldn't care about their people.

Don't you guys have a "house of assembly " or Senate leaders to help propose and effect laws to protect your environments?

Then they fix the problem by blowing up more pipeline sand polluting the environment further. Great solution!!

By the way, their representatives are the ones who took the action. They didn't receive monies and run off to Abj or Lagos or US to buy choice properties or build some Universities in another man's country!! The ND representative should learn to do same.

Oh, so you're bothered about the environment? I thought its only Yoruba that are bothered about it? Have your avengers lost their courage to bomb? Or did they run out of bombs to throw? cheesy

Can you mention the name of one lawmaker from the SW that spoke against PIB? Is it our fault that you have spineless and useless leaders dotting your erosion ravaged enclave? Did Tinubu stop them from fighting for you?

You had 5 senate presidents in 4 years, deputy senate president for 10 years, none of them had enough sense to legislate for your well being yet your brain readily came up with the Yoruba as the cause?

Anyway, the oil in lagos was discovered by a company fully owned by an omoluabi with name Yinka Folawiyo and no Yoruba will blow up his pipelines.

Any avenger that stops bombing pipelines in the Niger Delta will be cursed by shuku okuko bambiala.

cheesy cheesy cheesy

Frustration and hatred will kill you. Are you no longer happy with the bombing in your already wasted environment? Are you tired of seeing oil and black smoke all around you? You will continue to enjoy your degradation since rational thinking is beyond you.

The oil found in Lagos is offshore just like that of Mobil in akwa ibom. The communities there are not senseless like the avengers and other criminals you take as heroes so just like the akwa ibom man doesn't blow up his pipelines, the Yoruba, who have always being sensible about idiotic violence, won't also blow their pipelines cheesy

The only annoying part is that your own brothers are spineless and can't bomb anything even though they wish to be relevant like the ijaw people. If only you can bomb ohaji egbema in Imo state to send buhari a message, I for dey happy for you. Instead na to dey pour spit of frustration and bitterness all over social media una sabi cheesy
