I never knew kano was PEACEFUL until I saw for myself, yes I mean peaceful, and civilised too. I am in kano as I type this, to spend another few weeks, I love kano state, hospitable people. I thought I would see BH flying everywhere but no that's not kano. I am not a northerner but I think everyone should come ve a feel of the ancient town, I love kano state.

90% of people's perception that Kano is volatile is not true, coz I grew up from a northern Christian family in kano.

I can boldly say it, I knew about 15 corpers that ar currently engaging in quite lucrative jobs here in Kano after their Nysc. One Ifeanyi is ofcourse working with the state Science and Technicals schools board as a civil servant since 2008 and has acquired land and living peacefully with his neighbours _majority ar muslims_, of which am very sure is difficult for a non indigine from north to work in the state civil service of states like abia, delta, imo and so.

The only serious problem u may encounter apart from means of communication is NEVER to joke wit their way of life, most importantly, don't abuse or derogate their prophet or Islam, coz if u try it ehn, believe me, u will not live 2 see 2morow. And for d male corpers enh, refrain from any rlntship or trying to toast deir daughters. Then u ar good to go!

I could remember when we were posted to abia -umunna bende, those market women were shouting BOKO HARAM at us despite about 3 of us Christians frm North. - This does not happen in kano.

No five: Food Availability: No matter the level of recession, onething anyone serving in kano will be sure of is eating three square meals everyday and still have a little saving from the Allawee. things are relatively cheap here compared to other states. In a time that pure water sells for N10 in other states of the country, here in kano it still sells for N5, i still buy a bad N90. Also, in a time that the cheapest bread sells for N150 in other parts of the country, here in kano, N50 bread can form your break fast. Coke still sells for N70/big bottle. Call, ask anyone or come and see for yourself that these things are cheaper here in kano. infact, they move food from kano to other places. Except you have enough money and want to live beyond N19800. N200 meat still cook for me and i eat 3 piece of the meet pay meal grin grin grin. When people were shouting that tomatoes sells for a thousand naira, here in kano things were still normal beacuse most people here are farmers and they bring things directly from their market.

So what stops you from coming to a place where atleast your N19800 can feed you.

Also, here in kano, depending on your location, with your NYSC ID card, you can get free medical treatment. you can run your test, see a doctor and visit a Pharmacy store, all free of charge. My PPA have no Hospital but i tell you what i experience outside my PPA. i can't pay for my medication yet i get full medical treatment whenever am sick.

You see? life is cool in kano. when i was at home in Enugu, i have seen core members frustrated, looking for what to eat, i visited NYSC secretariat in Enugu and i heard the complaints of core members, even when am not from Enugu, but i am very sure i never wanted to serve in Enugu.

I served in Kano, lived in Sabo-Gari, worked in an Estate Firm in town. I was also thinking like the OP. Thinking Kano was all cool, until the religious crisis broke out. My words of advice and caution

1. Be very careful and mindful of your surroundings, they might seem all nice, which for the most part they are, but when sht hits the fan, your next door Islamic neighbor will be the one to cut off your head in a heartbeat.

2. Never get too comfortable. Always be vigilant.

3. Fridays is a NO NO. Fridays are taken seriously as prayer days to be observed by everyone. And I mean everyone.

4. Try to be always around Southerners.

5. Dress the part and learn the language.

6. Always have get-out cash at hand in case sht hits the fan.

For the most part Kano is a great place to live. Cost of living is cheap, there is security and its really a nice place if you can get past the flies, dust and all. But NEVER BE CAUGHT SLIPPING!!!!!. Enjoy your stay

No Six: kano is a big city

The inhabitants of this city don't make noise, but truth be told, its a beautiful city with nice state of the art decorations. Visiting nsaarawa and other local governments in the kano metropolis, you will realise its a beautiful place to be. if you enjoy tourism, then visit kano. And its a home to most companies, Due to its large population, many companies have made her their home.so there are places you can submit your Cv to. you have hope in Kano. i will expound on this later

Leave mrphysics alone o. I dey serve for Jigawa presently. During my interaction with one Delta lady resident in Kano last week, She told me that those almajiri boys turn to Spartacus when crisis starts. She showed me her hand that those almajiri boys broke in 2004( I really can't remember) during the Miss World crisis.

Why is mrphysics contradicting himself when he said you shouldn't bring your family over to settle down with you in Kano?

I rest my case for now!

Hmmn...I'm a Batch A'16 corp member serving in Ungogo LGA of Kano. Tho Ungogo is considered a town in Kano, I was posted to d 'village' area of it. My T-fare to Sabongari is #100. I want to give my own experience so far as regards ur reasons for serving in Kano.

1. Security.
There's no special or extraordinary security in Kano...infact u av to be at alert at all times. Most of the natives of where I stay don't respect corpers at all...they ar rude.e.g there's a football pitch behind my lodge (corpers' lodge). They play ball to d extent of playing it into our lodge, most tyms staining our clothes hung on d cloth line, hitting us unexpectedly and they come asking for d ball without remorse or apology. There was an ocassion when our LI was involved because a 'fight' broke out betw d 'footballers' and corpers. Even after warnings, they stil play d ball so high that it enters our lodge...(our lodge has a high fence). Others stare ridiculously at one...they wil stare when u ar coming, when u reach them, they stil continue staring and when u pass them, they turn and stare further....
U av to be careful how u move around....there was a particular evening around 7:30pm when my roomie and I were coming from one mini-mart. We were gisting excitedly as we walked bk to our lodge when my roomie suddenly tapped me...when I raised my head up, in d opposite direction approaching us were guys furiously smoking and frowning (about 12 of them) with sharp cutlasses (the blades were shining in d dark)...only God knows who they went to attack dt night. Na so me and my roomie took another route and ran all d way home.

With due respect to mrphysics, one can perceive a paid advert from afar. Op was talking as if one Corper gets one local security guard attached to him/her.

My advice to those contemplating to choose Kano based on OP's recommendation is that they should have a 'expect the best, prepare for the worst mentality'.

DON'T GET IT TWISTED: THE NORTH IN GENERAL AND KANO (AND BY EXTENSION, JIGAWA) IN PARTICULAR IS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO SERVE. BUT ANYTHIIING CAN HAPPEN AT ANY FUCKKIING TIME. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.

AS TIME GOES ON, I MAY DECIDE TO SHARE MY PERSONAL AND OR MY FELLOW CORPER'S EXPERIENCES AS A SOUTHERN NON-MUSLIM CORPER SERVING IN A 99.1% (CONFIRMED STATISTICS) MUSLIM POPULATED CORE-NORTHERN STATE.

Yap, we may need answers frm our muslim folks.

Let me answer your question with these narrative which happened three weeks ago in my ppa:

In this current Batch A16, three male corpers were posted to my ppa. One is a Northerner, the second a Yoruba Muslim while I am a Christian. We (my Yoruba Muslim fellow corps member and I) had a Hausa Muslim friend (emphasis on Hausa Muslim/Yoruba Muslim mine and deliberate) in that community. We were gisting one evening when my Corper guy asked him that why is it that the first question an Hausa babe usually asks her non-Hausa speaking 'toaster' is 'ARE YOU A MUSLIM?' (In case you are wondering how we got the 'LIVER' to 'toast' an Hausa babe in a 99.99% Muslim populated community, the answer is not too far fetched. We happen to be habitual night crawlers and we know beyond reasonable doubt that their girls are something else in the night).

In response to our question, he drew our attention to several things.

1. He asked my Yoruba Muslim Corper guy if he hadn't been observing the reactions of the locals anytime he goes to THEIR mosque to pray. He said that some of the locals were always confused that why will a CHRISTIAN WORSHIP WITH THEM IN THE MOSQUE. That my Corper guy has been tagged MUSLIMIYAH which ACCORDING TO HIM means a CHRISTIAN WHO PRETENDS TO BE A MUSLIM. He continued by saying that A CORE MUSLIM HAUSA NORTHERNER DOES NOT HOLD IN HIGH REGARDS, ANY OTHER MUSLIM FROM ANY OTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY REGARDLESS OF YOUR RELIGIOUS/MORAL UPRIGHTNESS NOT TO TALK OF CHRISTIANS.
2. There was a girl my Corper guy asked our Hausa friend to speak to on his behalf. My Corper guy was getting along with the babe with the little Hausa he understood. The girl all of a sudden began to distance herself. In the course of our discussion, our Hausa guy now drew my Corper guy's attention to that incident. He said the girl confronted him that why will he JOIN HER TO A CHRISTIAN GUY. He said all his efforts to make her see that my Corper guy was a MUSLIM but just happened (UNFORTUNATELY... Lol) to come from the SOUTHWEST was in vain.

I HOPE YOU CAN DO YOUR DEDUCTIONS. I REST MY CASE!

N.B: I STAND TO GAIN NOTHING FROM BADMOUTHING ANY RELIGION, TRIBE OR SECTION OF THE COUNTRY. I SAY IT AS IT IS. NO SUGAR COATING, NO FALSE ALARMS.

GRACIAS.

Amongst all north western ad north eastern states, the only two state I can advise anybody looking for low cost of living, adequate security, peaceful lifestyle of indigines, great reception, stable state allawee 5k is Sokoto and probably kaduna( but no state allawee). Infact, over here (Sokoto) almost all corpers are into one bizness or the other, cuz the locals dont usually do bizness much.. Like in my PPA, during heat period, we do sleep outsyd even with our phones and laptop and those boys that smoke hav ever for once come to disturb us since they know we are corpers. I am enjoying my stay here save for the extreme weather sometimes. Note: most corpers are also posted to town here and even if u are posted to the village, it is very easy for u to relocate back to town. U can do it with 5k or by knowing the right people from camp.

Then go to Enugu and you will understand better. i live in Enugu, spent lot of my time and years in enugu, so i can tell you that there is more water in kano than in Enugu. In which stay do corps members have water connected directly to their bathroom? kano is better because, these boreholes are everywhere. Mai rua that sell water, sell it very cheap. N20/25 liters gallon. Let's be truthful brother

My brother, I am sincere with my contributions.

I am a Lagosian; it has been Lagos since birth and prior to my undergraduate days which was also very close to Lagos, Ogun State. So, judging by my Lagos life and time, it is below per and alien to me.

Dont get me wrong, the security situation is way way more hyped than it is, but it doesn't take the fact that the illiterates are the problems of the North.

I stayed within the illiterates but I had to relocate. Even for me dressing up to church on Sunday became annoying to them so I had to leave. They were super nice and cool initially though.

They are usually receptive and kinder to corpers tho.

Ugosample:

Are you saying that those northerners treat those from down here like scum? or something like that?

Most of them (especially those who have not been able to get loose from the shackles of religious sentiments) have these superiority complex or should I call it a mindset that they are the only ones practising the purest form of Islam. Being educated or lack of education has done little or nothing to cure these set of people from their backward mindset. I've equally met some of them that are open minded about life. An example is my Hausa friend that I referred to in my earlier posts.

My fellow Hausa speaking, Christian B15 corps members in my ppa usually lament bitterly about the subtle and sometimes bold display of favouritism and sentimentality based on religion.

You may be tempted to ask if I have ever been a victim of their superiority complex? The answer is No for now. Why no for now? Because there is an issue on ground concerning we Corp members in my ppa that has to do with welfare. There has been underhand moves by the key decision makers to make things work in favour of our fellow Hausa Corper. By the time the issue is brought to a logical conclusion, I will be able to say an emphatic YES or NO.
