It's so true but the sad reality in Naija is, once most employers pay you at months end; they'd set off to use you to the last drop of your blood.

And, most employees don't have any choice but to satisfy their Oga whims in order to keep their jobs.

This is actually a wicked system that kills the workers health.

Especially those that have nothing to offer after office hours. I had a boss like that. Chai, we suffered!!! we always closed at 10 pm!!!

Absolute rubbish. This is for those who have static jobs, like taking stocks and all. The business close at 5:00pm, yet I sometimes leave the office at 7:00pm or more than that. Reason for this is because some issues are forwarded and or escalated, and one cannot just pack up and leave until it's resolved. There is a need a to address the issue immediately. That does not imply laziness.

This is so true. I had this job that starts by 9am and closes from 8pm upwards. I've closed from work by 11pm and gotten to my house by past 12 midnight on a couple of occasions. This is on a normal day o, on production days, I sleep over at the office. Then on weekends, you are mandated to go for assignments or face sanction.

I was just living like a robot then and I had no time for anything. One day, my body could not take the stress any longer and I crashed. I spent days in d hospital. My savings couldn't even pay the bills I incured. The HR only called me one day to say he heard I was sick and to confirm if it's true.
Nobody told me to resign sharply after that experience. I cannot come and go and kee myself by myself.

I think the Op's post is for lower level management. Every good manager knows that you are supposed to be the first in and the last to leave the office. To say "never work late" is very misleading. The higher your position in an organization, the larger your responsibilities, and the longer your work hours are.

I just resumed at this school yesterday as a teacher. School closed at 2:00pm....but owner said teachers wouldn't be allowed to leave until 4pm! I was what?!! 2pm to 4:30! We'll wait to do what!

You should work to live, not live to work.

Unless you work for yourself in which case your job is your life's work and your legacy.

You can pass on your business to your family but your job is non-transferable.

The same day he made an issue about not staying back after closing hours, I left the office right on schedule.

I will never compromise my personal time for work.. Fhuck that.

There are lots of jobs that require closing late. It is not because of laziness or whatever you call it. The job is scarce outside and you are saying people should not close late. Sack is loading if the nature of your job demands it and you fail to close late.

Whatever you do, don't forward this to your boss

How i wish all our work Managers and Directors can read this. I cant imagine myself always cruising from Madalla to Garki daily, leaving the house by 7am only to depart from the office by 8/9pm courtesy of my sabi sabi boss who felt all the works must be completed and yet never completed. I love him but detest him for this singular act. Funningly, he refuses to listen to complaints most often.
