Bayelsa Teachers Issue 21-day Ultimatum To State Govt. by Nobody: 1:58pm On Sep 20, 2016
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Bayelsa state government to fully pay the four months’ half salary of all teachers or the teachers in the state would stop working.

This, they said, would affect their expected participation in the conduct of the National Common Entrance and other examinations.

The state wing executive council of the NUT Bayelsa state chapter issued a 9-point communique titled “Not Until We Perish” highlighting their resolution after an emergency meeting to discuss the lingering non-payment of six months’ salaries to primary and secondary school teachers.

The state chairman of the NUT, Kalama Tonpre, while reading the communique, said that the union was committed to enhancing public school system but demands improved working conditions.

He highlighted “the apparent hardship suffered by teachers on account of the prolonged non-payment of over six months’ salaries owed primary and secondary school teachers in order to be at par with other civil servants in the state”.

Other problems discussed were the planned dismissal of teachers employed in 2008/2009, the non-payment of duty post allowances, shifting the responsibility of funding primary school teachers’ salaries to local government councils and non-implementation of promotions.

Others are the 18,000 naira minimum wage arrears and non-inclusion of stakeholders in state education law committee.

According to them, if these issues are not resolved, they would stop working.

The chairman continued by saying “an ultimatum of 21 days from today is given to the Bayelsa state government to fully pay the four months’ salaries of all teachers and address other problems”.

“For some teachers, these months without salary has been hellish as daily survival has been a major challenge,” he said.

The government on their part say they would do their best to pay the salaries for as many months as they can afford.

This is one state I'm asking what did they do with there money.
Great land mass very fertile, surrounded by rivers aquatic life in abundance, they have crude and oil companies. Less population which is plus for excess cash.
IOCs provide them with various social amenities eg water, power, health centres etc.
This state should be super rich, lack should not be an option here.

What other priority does a government has other than ensure that its citizens do not die of hunger. Every other government expenditure should be halted n the stomach infrastructure of the people given the urgent attention it deserves.

Where's Ben Bruce that was mocking Osun people some months back, what has he got to say? Can't he donate his money to Dickson to buy food for the hungry Bayelsa workers? Osun workers deserve an apology from this twitter senator

I'm sure if the headline reads "Aregbesola issued warning by the teachers" this thread would have seen the influx of wailers.. But it's of one of their own now, they are hiding somewhere... On top all the money and less population and working force bayelsa is still owing

They say too whom much is given, more is expected...... I'd like to add, too whom few is given......it's perfectly normal if you spring surprises. if after state allocation and 13% derivation..... Bayelsa is still owing its workers then not even total resource control can help the whole of Niger-Delta.

The teachers don't need to hold Seriake Dickson alone, they should forward their grievances to Mama Peace, according to her lawyers, she is a retired Permanent Secretary in the state's Ministry of Education thus one can be cock sure that the teachers salaries are probably 'resting' in her account for medical bills.

Abagworo:

What about Rivers State that owes 7 months? Most of these rich States are under godfather siege that needs liberation. Lagos can be said to have Tinubu as Godfather but then he allows the Governors work with their money unlike Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa. Bayelsa needs liberation.
.

There are states that don't want liberation for their people. they prefer their people to be uneducated so that the can easily manipulate them into doing anything for them before, during and after election. Now you can imagine why we have a lot of uneducated and dropouts that will still celebrate their useless govt . Education is the key to political liberation

Its pathetic that a state like Bayelsa with just 8 Local governments, with minimal population and being an oil producing state which 13% derivation accrues to cannot pay its workers salary. Sincerely, I think states' spending ought to be audited henceforth.....like What Tha 4ck are the previous governors and the incumbent ones been doing with all the allocations? Are they building roads on water or what? For God's sake this is a state surrounded by water, so they cant tell us they've been building state of the art roads. And if its jetties they've been constructing, let us see them. angry angry angry
