Onyiridike:It is not about hating education. It is about hating the way Nigerians think. The problem is they think mostly based of their stomach. If it was a competition and it was announced in the beginning of the school year that a prize would be given to the best students it would be a different story entirely. But, since they aren't expected to receive gifts for graduating, you shouldn't complain about it. Why would you complain about a gift. Were you expecting it? If anyone is expecting a gift for graduating, then that person needs their heads examined. I remember back in my day, it was with pride we would receive plaques for doing well in school. Now, because of poverty, it is all about the money. And you wonder why the Nigerian society is money crazed and corrupt. I tire for una i swear. |

Onyiridike:See you are right educatsón needs to be valued more, but you cant compare a beauty pageant to awards for academic excellence, one ,the pageants rewards based on a more rigid analysis of more returns, the beauty pageant are for profit, and one away to get the best of candidatés for the pageant is the attractive prizes, award for education is either for CSR by private company or some sort of way of encouraging talents, but this is not the optimal way for people to value education, the best away is to know that your degree can give you capacity to capitalize on the opportunuity around you, those opportunuities should be the main driving force,so dont compare a beauty pageant to award for excellence, they are not the same category |

horluwaloseyi:lolz! Out of point. Your comment have shown that you did not study in any of the "nigerian ivy leagues" you are obviously part of the learners am talking about. Who talked about unemployment? Why bring unemployment into what I stated just to buttress your senseless comment? |

aceblizzle:So Japan, USA and Germany are stupid for giving huge awards to renowed researchers? The man who developed PCR (Scientist Mullis) was rewarded with $10,000 and his idea was sold for $300,000,000. Our own Prof. A. J Nok of the Biochemistry department of ABU, Zaria was rewarded by Germany with £6,000, Japan with ¥3,000,000 among others for his work in trypanosiomiasis. How many academics have been encouraged by Nigerian Govt and private organizations? And you wonder why common Kenya is now challenging us? |

Onyiridike:Please tell me you are joking. Really? Our attitude towards education in Nigeria is laughable not because they don't give cash gifts to students but because you all are too money conscious. It is laughable because you still use the syllabus meant for the 70's. It's laughable because students are expected to buy handouts and sometimes give lecturers bribes. Please stop me when and if you see a lie in anything i have said. |

Bollinger:Don't argue too much with an illiterate. Their belief is that this cash award is the payment for the excellent performance. This cash was just given to make them understand that the society recognises the excellence while the actual rewards awaits them as they impact on the society. |

Bollinger:Up till now you still more time arguing about prize instead of trying to understand the point people are trying to make here. There are a lot of young men on the street who smoke marijuana and have nonchalant attitude towards education because Timaya is more respected in Nigeria than a Prof. In the future, and even presently many youths who have the potential to become great engineers are no longer interested in Education because MTN would rather use P-Square to advertise their products and pay him millions instead of Professor of Electrical Engineer. Diamond bank would prefer Mikel to renowned Prof. in banking and pay him millions. Do you expect the younger ones to take education serious in a country like ours? Talking about using your knowledge to generate wealth, GEJ donated billions to Nollywood while our Research Institutes are in comatose. How do you come up with new inventions in a country like ours? You pay a football coach N5000,000 monthly and pay a doctor N150,000. Where is the motivation? In developed country, education is their first priority. Even if I've the knowledge to develop the cure for HIV and Government didn't employ me and even if I am employed, the place where I work does not have the equipment that I can use to transform my knowledge into physical reality. What is the use of the knowledge? Germany donate $24m to ABU, Zaria as a research grant and soon they will make a breakthrough. How much has your Government ever invested into research? People are already dieing from common malaria in Nigeria because Nigerian Government would rather award Omotola with the title of OFR than recognizing a Doctor who spent years in school. Many Nigerians would rather be Mr. Ibu than being a Doctor. Mikel's father was abducted and Nigerian Government swoop into action immediately and rescued him. Can they do the same to even a V.C? |

nextprince:Before you call people illiterate i.e if you actually understand the meaning of that word, try and understand their point. The money was given to them to make them understand bla bla.... Where did you get that or it is just a figment of your imagination? And you are even calling others illiterates. When money is given to the best graduating students from the best universities in the country, do you need a native doctor or a suitsayer to understand that the prize was meant to reward them for their performance? If that is not the case why was not the money given to every graduate? Why were they singled out? |

Onyiridike:And you don't understand that knowledge is the reward for graduating. Everything else is secondary. With that knowledge you can achieve the incredible. It is only in Nigeria things like what you are advocating for happens. I have never heard or seen anything like this in all my years and i have been to plenty of countries. Nigerians don't think like normal human beings hence the reason the country is completely and utterly phucked up. The abnormal is normal for you. Everything is about money and justifying the weird way of getting it. Why na? |

Onyiridike:What's dis one saying? I never knew that there is a rule that graduates with outstanding performance should be given cash award, and huge amount at that . If u say I'm talking based on imagination, pls tell me where u get the inspiration that best graduating students should be given huge amount of money as reward for their performance. What I know is that they are recognised with presentation of things like plaques etc, although sometimes with some token. Note that outstanding performance is not the end itself but a means to the end. If a graduate is truly brilliant, presentation in cash award is not the reward but rather what he is able to achieve for the benefit of the society will fetch him mouth watering material benefits. Poverty has reduced us to just be thinking of the immediate material benefits of our work rather than thinking of how we can give to the society before demanding for our rewards. Even in other countries u are talking about, what they do is just rewarding these researchers for their outputs rather than on account of being the best when u have not made any impact. Any award based on academic performance is strictly presentation of things like souvenirs, plaques, letter of commendation etc. Get ur facts right pls. And lastly, I did not quote u cos I really hate arguing with ladies (as suggested by ur registered gender). And reference was never made to u in my post, so pls keep off my mention. |

Bollinger:I give up on you. You cannot teach a child how to farm and after he has learnt excellently well, you then issue him paper (Certificate) that shows that he can farm. And unfortunately and very unfortunately, you did not provide him with hoe, cutlass, seeds and fertile land; and yet you expect him to succeed and feed the nation. |

Onyiridike:My main point is the out of place comparism between entertainment shows and academic awards for stellar Gpa,besides you mention researchers that have one way or another contributed to the society not just get high grades, there's a difference |

oluwafreshkid:It's really a sad development when the reward off academic excellence is a mere paltry cash gift of 50k and yet there's too much publicity over it. Honestly, it'ld have been much appreciated if the guys were rewarded with scholarships to study up to PhD level in order to encourage others. Naija share, nawa for our reward system! |

Onyiridike:Oh my freaking God!! What are you talking about? Do you know how disjointed your comments are? It's like i am trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle. It absolutely makes no iota of sense. See what happens when you focus on money rather than knowledge and an education? Smh. |

Bollinger:You even have time to be arguing with that girl?Ask her that how many doctors earn up to Taylor Swift in America? And she won't be be able to answer and you don't see the doctors over there complaining. Why the hell should I pay you for graduating with a good grade,So the only driving force for graduating with good grades is for material benefits, not for passion or the improvement of your society? You just have to marvel at Nigerians logic |
