Mikel Honours

Chelsea
FA Community Shield: 2009
UEFA Champions League: 2011–12
UEFA Europa League: 2012–13

Nigeria
Africa Cup of Nations: 2013
2016 Summer Olympics : Bronze Medal

Individual
FIFA World Youth Championship Silver Ball: 2005
African Young Player of the Year: 2005, 2006
Chelsea Young Player of the Year: 2007, 2008

Do you understand four FA Cups, Two English Premier League titles, Two League Cups, A Champions League and a Europa League? Mikel was part of all these.
with all those club titles, Mikel is still not regarded as a Chelsea great except here on nairaland. It's not just about titles but contribution to the team matters more. Zola is a Chelsea Legend but didn't win a champions league or epl medal.

Please check out this site on ranking of Chelsea greatest. Ba comes ahead of Mikel. Haha

Men..the pages have moved so very fast in the last 48hrs.

Thanks guys for all the birthday wishes.

So many arguments flying.

But let me dwell on the Mikel's case.
I know a lot of u guys expected so much from Mikel. More so that he was 2nd best player just behind Messi at the WYC. U should even ask urself "where is Taye Taiwo that came third".

You feel Mikel should probably be 1 step behind the likes of Messi, Ronaldo or Neymer right? But football is not like that.

I can categorically say it here that only 2 Nigerian players are regarded greater than Mikel in terms of status, recongnition, contribution to club and national teams and club and national team achievements. They are Nwankwo Kanu and JJ Okocha.

Mikel to me is the 3 greatest. Vincent Enyeama and Rashidi Yekini come next in that order.Peter Rufai follows.
@bolded needs some clarification.

Jj Okocha. grin very funny.

Nwankwo Kanu and Jj Okocha can never be in the top 3 best players.

Record no dey lie.

In Mikel's first three years at Chelsea, he had the highest pass completion in the Premier League, boasting an impressive 89.93%. That’s even better than the likes of Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard or Man United’s Paul Scholes.

Mikel played a starring role in every of the major trophies he won for club and country.... Abi I lie??

And uhmm... Ranker.com isn't Chelsea's official site for ranking The Chelsea legends. Looollllll....

A lot of blogs and sites flying around with personal opinions when the records are there for all to see.

2012 UCL final.... Mikel starred from start to finish and was one of the major reasons Chelsea left munich with the Champions league trophy against all odds. Mikel contributed more on the day than Drogba sef... #fact... Ask the sky sports pundits on the day.

Of the four FA cups Mikel won, He starred in three of the finals from the start and his contributions were all top-class.... In one such finals, Mikel played with a pain-killer coz he was so vital and it was his pass to lampard that resulted in Lampard's assist for Drogba to score for Chelsea's 1-0 win.

Afcon 2013... We know the story... Children don tire to dey hear this bed tale... Na wa oooo.... How many times we go repeat am for unahuh Loollll

These are just the highlights of his involvements in each of his major honors and more..... So OGA.... MIKEL WAS NO SQUAD PLAYER BUT A REAL PART OF THE ACTION.... smiley

There are players that helped Nigeria qualify for her first nations cup, won Africa's first olympic football gold, won Africa's footballer of the year awards(some multiple times), were best players in their clibs in Europe and inspired a Nigerian football club to win back to back African champions league title. Those are our true greats. Players that gave us great night in football, memorable nights, proud nights. Players whose moment of magic we remember til this minute. Rashidi Yekini celebrating Nigeria's first WC goal, Kanu Nwankwo scoring two of our most memorable goals on that 1996 night, Finidi George regarded as one of the finest wide midfielder in the world, Amuneke scoring that headef goal that gave us gold, Ikpeba referred to as the prince of Monaco.

Truth be told, Mikel won't be remembered like these true greats whose contributions we still appreciate decades later.

Mikel wasn't MVP of AFCON 2013, he didn't win the golden boot neither did he have the highest number of assists. He wasn't even Nigeria's best player or captain in that tournament. Again he was just a part of the squad, nothing more nothing less

Another great time was Finidi George in the 90s.

Honours

Club
Ajax
Eredivisie: 1993–94, 1994–95, 1995–96
UEFA Champions League: 1994–95; Runner-up 1995–96
UEFA Super Cup: 1995
Intercontinental Cup: 1995
Johan Cruijff Shield: 1994, 1995

African Cup of Nations in 1994.

Unfortunately, he chose to go for an expensive deal at Real Betis and fell off the limelight. At Ajax, undoubtedly the best winger in the World. I think his younger brother's death also affected him.

I didn't say he was MVP (the organisers preferred Pitroipa anyway... Lol).... I said he was "Lord"... Looollll... There's a difference. smiley

He dominated Seydou Keita against Mali... He "lorded" it over Yaya Toure against CIV, He bossed the midfield against The burkinabe in the final... He was "Lord of The AFCON in 2013". smiley

And here you go again with another lie... Mikel actually made four assists in six games at Afcon 2013 which was actually the highest of all players at the tournament. So uhmmm.. Why u too dey lie like this....

Loollll.....

He even made the Tournament's Best XI.... Haba!!!! Kilode Oga? Wetin u want again?? Chaiiiii... Try harder!!!!

I have buried this rankings of our greats before If you remember Sir GoodJoe.... I placed Kanu as no.1, Mikel as no.2 and Finidi "World class" George as no.3..... From any angle, these guys are Nigeria's top 3 greatest of all time...

My research labs section for sports records/statistics computers can put together the actual top 10 worthy of being called Nigeria"s Top 10 greatest of all time.... Loollll...

But I am certain the top 3 are Kanu, Mikel and Finidi... I have been shouting this for a while with their attached achievements for club and country on previous sports threads.

Keshi accolades:
