Capital No. The only direct programme for HND graduates in the university is the Professional Masters in Business Administration. For any other course the candidate must first pass through a bridge programme called "Post Graduate Diploma" (PGD) in the relevant course. Note also that this PGD can only be done in mostly universities of Technology and state universities. First generation universities do not accept HND graduates for PGD enroute to masters. It is possible but in the US. If she can strife for a scholarship, it will aid fees.

All she has to do is convert her HND to US standard. The reason is that in the US, their grade point is on 4.0 scale like we have in Nigeria. And practically speaking, by the time the grades are standardized, it will almost likely be more than what she got here in Nigeria because of the more course and hours alotted to out courses..

There is an organization that US recommend for the conversion. I can't remember. Google it. @champellajoe, log1 please can you help with organization that does the HND conversion?

Tell your cousin to give it a try. Trust me, it is possible.

It depends on what you want to do afterwards. If you intend to leave the university environment completely and work in the industry then go for Professional Masters. If you intend to continue in the university/academic environment, doing research and teaching then go for Academic Masters

You can't do an MBA direct too. She must have a PGD in her chosen specialization. Am an MBA student in UNIZIK and most of my course mates from other departments even though they had B.Sc had to run a PGD first in their specialization before their MBA...those with HND were no exceptions. She just has to enroll for a PGD programme or better still go abroad if the funding is not a problem.

@OP, Let your sister not make the mistake of thinking having an MBA will necessarily give her an advantage over other graduates. When we completed our HND, many of my colleagues rushed to do their their masters. Some of us looked for jobs. By the time the masters people finished, they either had to start looking for the same entry level jobs, on d same grade we started from, or they found it difficult even getting any.
My suggestion is, get a job first, grow on it while doing your MBA or Masters part time.

I would rather advise her to do BSc/B.Tech/B.Eng in those countries first otherwise she will have to also work there, if she come back to Nigeria to work, they will still discriminate against her without a PGD. No academic institution in Nigeria will even employ her as lecturer, meanwhile, the PGD curriculum is just like what is done in HND II, Nigeria is one kind country.

Solace u are saying the truth. No matter how brilliant u are, if u have HND certificate, discrimination will always be there even with PGD combine.

My advise is for her to enrol for a top up program to get a degree first, be4 thinking of any post graduate studies. Schools outside nigeria is one to two years maximum to get ur degree with HND.

My advice goes thus.... He/ she has to enrolled for a top- up course . It's run by some UK universities. It's specially for equating HND to BSC in a duration of one year. From there I'm sure she can secure scholarship grants. Pls. Don't go for Pgd if you want to be fully accepted into the academia ......... There are some groups of cabal who would do everything to keep peeps without BSC from the academic lime light.

During the era of IBB, I went to visit a friend lecturing in a Federal University then. I met them (my friend and some of his colleagues) discussing why they won't vote a particular Professor for the DVC position. The reason they gave was that the man is a Professor without a degree. It was strange to hear that, because this is a man I knew had a PhD, so I asked them "is the doctorate degree no longer a degree?". They argued that the man did not have a first degree, so he didn't have a foundation and you can't build something on nothing. This is a Professor with HND, PGD, MSc and PhD; he lost the DVC election woefully.

The discrimination is not limited to the academic world, it's all over.

I know made mistake in my typing, but u don't have to abuse me.I really don't have time to cross check, but any way iam presently studying for my PGD in ABU,I graduated with distinction my self but I have to follow the system that is how it works. There are professional doctorates such as DBA, DPA etc. An MBA holder can still proceed to the DBA programme.

pls go and get B.Tech/B.Eng because with HND you are not recognize by professional bodies like COREN as an Engineer. No academic department will employ you because of the deficit. If you like academics go and get your degree. pgd is a no no for you.

MBA is a terminal certificate, you cannot proceed to PhD with MBA. Academic masters will lead to PhD.

My case is similar to yours. I graduated with HND distinction from a federal polytechnic, finished my ICAN within one and half years.

After some years I had to enroll for a BSC in Accounting in a state university. I completed the program with a good first class (4.7).

Currently, I am gainfully employed.

What i tell my friends with an HND is to go for BSC. Will on it, fight to come out with first class.

This is a serious case with the academic system in Nigeria. Sincerely, it needs be reviewed. However, some universities, like the Federal University of petroleum resources effurun, have top-up programmes that would help polytechnic graduates with engineering background.

Many people here have explained why it is better to get a first degree before pursuing a masters degree. I agree that it may be the best bet given that you may not know where the deficit may rear its ugly head in future.

Its either Bsc or nothing.The Nigerian educational system has designed polytechnics/HND to produce middle level manpower as such obtaining an additional qualifications like MSc might still still not place you at per with you peers in a highly competitive labour market like Nigeria.
As you progress in your career, reference will still be made to your first degree which might deny you of some leadership and headship roles in your organization.
My candid advice is go for a Bsc instead after which you can now do your MSc.
