Before you all start all the unnecessary bashing of Nigeria, "diplomats" are 'untouchable' in every country and some of them tend to abuse this power so its not particular to only Nigeria so you all should look for another way to vent........... angry angry
.

The word "untouchable" can only be used within the confinement of the embassy of that particular diplomat, no one is untouchable on a public asset. He is abusing the law, simple!

Yes! The man is absolutely right. Why should he obey the law where the people that made the law does not obey it.

Although the diplomat may have flouted traffic laws, NOTHING will happen to him.

Under international law, he has immunity from arrest and prosecution. But this immunity only applies if the Nigerian government recognizes him as a diplomat to be covered by such immunity. If he is an attaché, Consular general, an ambassador, or an official in the ambassador'a office, immunity covers him.

The only options, the FG has is to expel him from the country; or appeal to his home government to waive his immunity. If the diplomat's immunity is waived, he could be dragged to court for failure of paying the traffic fine.
I dont think a diplomat will ever pay a traffic fine ever. We use to trash it back in the day grin

As a graduate of International Studies and Diplomacy from the Great UNIBEN, I have the authority to tell everyone that the diplomat cannot be prosecuted in Nigeria. He has immunity, our diplomat can do same even in the USA and nothing will happen. The immunity that the guy enjoya is derived from the president of the sending country, in this case his president.

I don't want to go into details but the bottom line is that the Traffic Warden was not properly trained about diplomatic practices in his police training hence we was wasting his time with him. There is nothing our government can do about it. As a matter of international practice, diplomats' bags, residents and domestic staff are immuned, they don't pay tax too. There is another one known as Privileges aside the immunity they enjoy.

That is all I can say for now for the purpose of education so that some of should not be fooling ourselves with certain comments.
Thanks about this and let's hope those who didnt know before now can learn a thing or two about diplomatic privileges and stop exhibiting flagrant ignorance at this time and age.

Its even a big shame and national embarassment that the traffic warden attempted to harass the man which could lead to a serious diplomatic row. The best he could have done was to gather and document his evidence of the breach and forward, via NPF authority to the head of the mission where the driver originate from.

Truth is, if that was a diplomatic vehicle, there is nothing any Nigerian security agent could do to accost him. It is the law.

No that your notion is wrong. If a diplomat fails to obey traffic law in the western world like UK, He gets fined and will lose points from his/her Driving license if issued by UK (if not issued by UK government that will go on his driving history created via the driving license he is using). If he fails to pay the fine after 28 days, then he will be charged to court and that will now be viewed as a court case. You guys should not make assumptions nobody is above the law and should be treated as such.
He may be issued a fine, but he can't be charged to court, due to his immunity.
Like I stated earlier, Abuja can expel him from the country, or ask his home govt to waive his immunity.

Even if his driver's license is revoked, he could always obtain one from his home country

Not entirely true. He cannot be sued or prosecuted but he can be expelled or his accreditation withdrawn by FG.

So he's touchable if he breaks the law. Maybe his kids/family, if any, possibly settled into life & school will be uprooted yet again.

I know of a diplomat who killed someone at a Zebra crossing in a car accident in a European country. A diplomat from a central African country. He could not be tried in court for causing death by dangerous driving and negligence, but he was going to be expelled when his country withdrew him.

It depends on how much impunity a host country is willing to accept from foreign diplomats. Such a careless utterance by this dickhead would not be tolerated in civilised countries.

On the surface their bags are not searched but advanced countries spy on diplomats routinely & know most things going on at most embassies. cheesy cheesy

The Nigerian police has rendered Traffic warden so useless. Imagine what he said to him . How I wish the Traffic warden can be on their own because since the establishment of traffic warden the police has done nothing to improve them.
