First Car Choice

Please EPPPP!!!!

This is my first thread in this section, I’m a complete automobile newbie in the middle of making a very critical buying decision.
I need the help of the astute members of this section in making the perfect choice of Car Brand , Model and Year that would be best suited for my needs & within my budget .I’ll be spending a sizeable chunk of my savings on this so I need to get it RIGHT the first Time, I ABSOLUTELY do not have the luxury of trial.
-Car will be used primarily for intercity commuting
-The roads in my locality are bad so I’m thinking in the line of good ground clearance (most likely a small SUV)
-Reasonable maintenance cost and fuel economy, pleasurable drive, durability, good handling are of course a necessity.

Here are my own thoughts on some considered options:
Golf 5 ( afraid of ground clearance and how it would fare on bad roads)
Peugeot 206 ( same as above)
BMW 3 or 5 series (afraid of ground clearance and cost of parts/maintenance ; fuel economy not really a concern)
RAV 4 2002/2003 ( I generally like European cars, but not sure how durable the japs are and how well they handle)
Lexus Rx 300 ( Same as above )
Interested in very sound registered vehicles .Budget is 1.2m for SUV and 900k for sedan. can adjust depending on condition of vehicle.
PLEASE ADVISE !!!! I NO SABI NAFFIN FOR THIS CAR MATTER

cc Siena Gazzuzz Lexusgs430 Autojoshng and all the other great guys on here I dont know

I would suggest either the Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV or similar vehicles considering the clearance you require.
NB: Once you shortlist a vehicle for purchase, pay for GAZZUZZ to inspect prior to purchase.

Thanks for your response.
You mean any of the CRV models between 2002 and 2006?
Heard alot of scary stuff about Honda front axles or something like that. Doesn't apply to the CRV ?

Appreciate the response chief.
I definitely intend to get professional inspection and opinion before deciding.

Do you reckon i can get a good deal within the stated budget ?

How does a 2002 CRV compare favourably to... say a 2002 RAV 4 for instance.

How great a deal Do you reckon i can get with my stated budget ?

how does an 02 CRV compare with an 02 RAV 4 in your opinion
Re: First Car choice by bizzle2: 8:51pm On Oct 08, 2016
Came across this data/ spec comparison between an 02 CRV and an 02 RAV 4

Can anyone explain or tell me the import of the difference in the stated gear ratios ? : reverse ratio, second gear ratio, drive axle ratio etc.....

For instance, Does the one with a higher reverse ratio move into reverse faster or something

Re: First Car choice by GAZZUZZ(m): 9:05pm On Oct 08, 2016
availability of parts, at affordable prices is what attracts me to the CRV, I almost got 1 last week, unfortunately there was a rio at an irresistible price so I got it instead.

As you said you prefer european cars the golf 5 would have been perfect but as this is your first car I suggest you buy a more rugged model like the mk2 or mk3. I mentioned golf 4 because it's an ideal balance of performance and style as I sense you have an eye for good things. I also think you should involve a good mechanic in making your decision as he will be the one to maintain the car afterwards. Cheers

Are you saying the Golf 4 is more rugged than the Golf 5 ?

By Mk2 and Mk3 do you mean Golf 2 and Golf 3 ?

I'll definitely get professional assessment before buying,

My issue with the Golf tho, is road clearance

I dislike the design of the 99 model. And i don't think they have OBD. The OBD is an absolute necessity for any one I finally decide on.
At the moment my top choices are 2003 CRV AWD, or a 2001/2002 RAV4

I have a golf 4 and overall I think it's a nice car but am of the opinion that Golf 4 and newer models are not everyday cars considering the nature of our roads. They are excellent cars for traveling on long distance.

Yes by mk2 and 3 I meant golf 2 and 3, they are more rugged on our roads and the cost of maintenance isn't much due to the availability of spare parts although they might not have the best interior
