African American author Paul Beatty has become the first American to win the highly coveted Man Booker Prize for fiction for his bestselling novel, "The Sellout".
The Man Booker Prize committee made the announcement yesterday.

The narrator of "The Sellout", an African-American called "Bonbon" tries to put his Californian town back on the map, from which it has been officially removed, by re-introducing slavery and segregation in its high school.

The 289-page novel begins with "Bonbon" facing a hearing in the Supreme Court, looking back over the events that led up to that point.

The novel emphasized the discrimination against the blacks in America. I deliberately used black for the title of the topic to emphasize the fact.

Ben Okri is the first and only Nigerian writer who has won the main Booker Prize for his esoteric novel "The Famished Road" in 1991.

The great Chinua Achebe of blessed memory was the first Nigerian and so far the only Nigerian winner of the Man Booker International Prize in 2007.
