The reality of arms procurement is that it is often shrouded in secrecy. And so I doubt the entire validity of the thread. You need to authenticate, what did we try to buy that was refused specifically. There are very transparent and stringent laid down arms procurement protocols, in all western countries. You don't buy arms on the pages of news papers. Don't forget in the USA you can buy automatic weapons from Walmart and most gun stores with a driving licence. So what did we try to procure that was refused and why. GEJ and his associates bought 18 used old T72 tanks and paraded them as brand new. And to show you just how weak Boko Haram and or how poorly equipped the Nigerian armed forces were there was an actual major shift in our successes on the battlefield. In comparison Syria has 1500 T72 tanks. |

my people, d reason for the US arms embargo on Nigeria is simple but it's till a concept that eludes most Nigerians. When the military is allowed unlimited access to arms in times luke dis, it is called military empowerment and when they become so powerful they will now use the same arms to torment the very country where they r to protect. History has proven that and just by looking at the conduct of military men on the streets of Nigeria u will c that the nigerian army has d tendency to overthrow civilian government. So a balance has to be maintaned between military empowerment and capacity building. |

also, counter terorism is mainly about inteligence. It is a sensitive war that requires surgical precision not brute force |

Why look to buy 10 new aircraft with scare forex when 13 old ones were just repaired and made operational? .... and why buy from different sources when training and maintenance would be more difficult ultimate and expensive? |

jumpandpas:I am at loss to understand your proposition. You imply that Boko haram has not been defeated. Firstly, Boko no longer hold territory and as a conventional armed force they are technically defeated. However, as an ideology that ill informed and ignorant people buy into. They will essentially continue in one guise or the other, adinfinitum. Arms procurement is a continous exercise it's about development and improvement. The USA and Russia amongst a host of other nations spends billions on R & D. The idea is to get better. So Nigeria should remain with obsolete and outdated military hard Ware and platforms ![]() |
| Re: Nigeria Looks To Russia, Pakistan For Arms, With Continuing US Embargo by lucabrazzi: 3:10pm On Nov 17, 2016 |
boko haram is not just an organisation, it is an idea and a cause which some are living for and others are willing to die for. Remember 'no cause is truely lost if there is but one fool left to fight for it' |

This is a short term solution. We need to advance our own weapons industry domesticly. All this money could stay in Nigeria if we put graduates to work. We also have an easy work force to exploit aka NYSC (who have relevant skills). If we had strategic government this would be plan. Long term in order to be regional hegemony we need to get our millitary strength and economic strength. |
