am more dan scared for the test,am already depressed self,i wish i dnt hv to do any stupid test,i wl sha acept my fate nd stay jejeli in Nigeria, suffering bt with peace of mind.Or paying for d exam myself, my failure wouldnt hv bin a big deal if its my money

Hello @modestgal,
Be optimistic. The right attitude goes a long way to help you succeed. Am a lady like you. So I would share my solutions with you.

I always come to this thread for information. And I got to know of this thread two months to my exam. I got links to all GRE materials, and I ended up not reading over 90% of them. Oh God, I love simplicity and there was no way I was going to go through all those book. But then, everyone kept mentioning Manhattan 5pounds and Magoosh video and I decided I was going to study with only those two materials. So what did I do?

Took the Powerprep test, my score was terrible. But i noticed my weaknesses and wrote them down.

Next, i read the ETS GRE Review and got the basics of the examination.

Then I made a timetable which I judiciously followed. I work full time, it was difficult but I dedicated two months to study. No dates, hanging out or resting. In fact, I stayed behind after work to study for 3 hours because that was the only time I could study. If I go home,I would just eat and sleep. So basically, I just used Manhattan, tried to finish it. But did about 90% of it. For vocabs, I focused on Magoosh flash cards and later discovered mesmerise.com.

A month to my exam, i came on this thread and someone kindly sent me Magoosh videos. It was wonderful, i actually realized I was a visual learner. Unfortunately, I could not finish the verbal videos.

Also, on sundays, i solved full length practice test from kaplan and also did Manhattan test. Two days before my exam, I did the Powerprep. My verbal and my Quant scores were getting better. but not as I would have loved. But I never lost hope. I am surrounded by people that believed in me and the support was awesome. Thank God.

Finally, 14th of Nov, I wrote my exam and I did not feel the burnout because I did at least 4 full length practice test. I just saw Q160,v158. I was shocked but I thank God that all those sacrifices paid off.

My point is you need to be optimistic and define what is important to you. If GRE is the hurdle you need to cross, damn every other thing and focus on getting the best you can.

I hope my formula is simple enough for you. Manhattan with Magoosh videos and Magoosh flash cards did it for me. All the best, love.

Hello revenant,
Now that is where taking my first Powerprep test helped me and subsequent full length test. When I took my first test, I saw my scores and I took note of topics I failed. I headed to ETS math review, i started with those topics before I went to the other topics.
I read up those topics in Manhattan textbook and I stopped there. Remember I have just two months. Then, I started solving those hard questions in Manhattan 5 pounds. For instance, I noticed I failed questions on geometry. But after studying it. I was hardly failing geometry. Don't focus on your strength, you might be tempted. I went from difficult to easy. That was my strategy.

Ok, So your suggestion now is even if I have not done math like 10years, I should still do the power prep just to gage myself right, before anything else.

I believe it helps. It worked for me. Doing so would help you know what you are getting into. And your score might shock you shocked and give you the much needed motivation to get the job done. Save the second for the last.

Thank you, will do that, I am currently looking at Algebra in Manhattan Text Book maybe when I m through with it, I will just do the PowerPrep and see how it is, despite having work/research experience with publications, the GRE is a bit strange to me.

SirRiddy & Co! How do schools place emphasis on GRE/Work/Research Experience. I have a combine six years of work/research experience with four publications and one conference paper. I m going to write the GRE though but preparation hasn't been great, but I have made up my mind to write it.

helpful and the strategies even better. I completely agree
with taking the powerprep early on during prep. Wish you the
best in your applications and please keep us posted. Cheering for you!
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Nobody: 8:38pm On Nov 20, 2016
In my program and extensively the engineering college here, high emphasis is
placed on test scores especially for candidates applying from developing countries.
My advisor was telling me a week ago how a student from a Nigerian state university
came to the program and performed woefully. He could not even get an MS degree even
though he was sponsored fully by a Nigerian government. He said candidates from Africa
and many parts of India are highly scrutinized for their GPA due to the low educational standards.
My grad program director always insists on average of 160Q 150V but he can be flexible
depending on your other strengths. A friend from China has 168Q 145V and he is in the program.
He has publications in a very good conference and so he was accepted. Your publication can be huge
advantage if they are of quality and someone is interested in hiring an RA.

Work experience is relevant if it is related, else Nigerian work experience does not hold much water.
More emphasis is on research experience than work experience except from maybe business programs.

If you want to write the GRE and you are on this thread, you have very little excuse to score below 310.
I wish I had this platform when I was prepping. I was mostly prepping solo with lots of motivation from
great people on the visa thread. Read through the pages and get to work. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I also appreciate the effort of Sir riddy, happyday, icool, pennstate chemEng01, Adetola01 and others that have contributed to d thread..Actually I spent just two weeks and few days for preparation and d result actually proved that. Don't think I'm a refractory person as the minimum preparation time was lucidly stated on the first page rather I was just been chased by application deadline and personal reason. @bold.... I totally understand. I don't blame them at all for the extra scrutiny. Reason why I push myself during my MS program to come out tops to avoid unnecessary scrutiny for a future PhD admission. Oh! And writing the GRE a second time to improve my scores. I can't just embarrass a UK distinction. It was extremely difficult to achieve. grin

Kudos for writing the dreaded GRE! But these scores don fall your GPA hand oh! My little advice....Forget Fall 2017. Take your time and study for both exams. You need to rewrite both. Target Spring or better still Fall 2018, so that you have more than ample time to prep for the tests. I did the same. I was hoping for Fall 2016 admission but I realized I needed time to prep for GRE, research schools and all. So I forwent that idea just to give ample time to package myself well. No need to rush my dear. America will still be there in 2018. Don't mind Trump. My 2 cents though.

Hello sirs and mas, I took the TOEFL test last Friday. During the biometrics, a small discrepancy was observed between the 'day' of birth on my passport and the one on their system. I paid BY mafit to register me and I guess the fault came from them. I was allowed to take the test but the test admin said he will file it in his report and send it to toefl. He said I should contact toefl so that they won't cancel my scores. I have mailed toefl, waiting for a reply. Pls guys, what do u think can happen? It was just the a wrong 'day' that was registered. All other details match perfectly. I'm scared oo, I don't even have any money for a retake.
Thank you all
I would call ETS tomorrow rather than waiting for a reply. I think it can easily be resolved. Please try to call them tomorrow unfailingly.

ModestGal, we cannot work like this cheesy You need to learn how to calm down tongue

5lb manhattan or just the 1-6manhattan books -Same thing.

i cnt continue reading cx i dnt knw which to read - You have to oooo, your money cannot come and go and waste.

Ets math review - Official material from the test makers, good book. You can get this on the ets site.

i hv less dan two month for my exam - This is a fair enough duration for preparation. What you need is a study plan.

dnt knw hw to start the vocab building - You have to start from somewhere and I recommend the Magoosh Vocab Builder for android. The Vocab app got well arranged after the last update.

which book to read for verbal - The Priceton review as recommended by people here helped me understand the verbal RC better. Scored 152 with little preparation, hope to add atleast an additional 5 marks this time. I no like ets english ooo

is it good to use, All d flashcards i hv, dnt rily like them cx they ae nt organized, too mny And too short, shld i jx use the Gruber 3500wordlist - Start from the Magoosh app, when you get a clearly understanding of what you need to pass the verbal, you can then 'diversify'.
