There is no real essence for living. This is the bleak truth.

Deciding not to exist is the logical path to tread. But a surrogate for suicide is creating subjective meaning for ourselves and trying to make the best of our lives. But this is all self deceit anyway.
Thanks this comes closest to the most logical answer, if there is no after life, there is no essence to live and will open a whole lot of other questions.
I will take this and move on to my next question when I feel the time is right.

I think you are spending more time thinking about the destination rather than about the journey itself, The essence of life is to Live and let live, the process of living is what you should be focused on and not what happens after its over, a movie is not judged by the contents of the credit scene rather it is judge by the content of the storyline itself.

The journey of life is what counts and not the destination, enjoying this journey and also helping other do the same should be the ultimate purpose of life, and even though there is no destination, atleast it would be worth the ride.
Yes my thought is on the destination, if the destination is futile, why the effort on the journey, some people are most result oriented than process oriented.
If the result of 1% input is equal to 99% input, whybthe stress

And you go on and on again.
Just because something is futile to you doesn't mean it is to others.
And just because its futile doesn't mean you shouldn't it.
We are humans, we love we hurt we die. And repeat.

If you or anyone don't want to live again, then its fine.
I'm just trying to tell you that not believing in an after life doesn't equate to not finding meaning in life.
We are all meant to go as long as possible.
Actually its not about me.
Thanks for the time though, grizzlybear has done justice to the question. Not that I agree to it.

There is no objective essence. The description you gave of the essence of life is subjective. The contents of the story line of life is vanity and futility. All we are ever going to do is struggle and survive, and if we are lucky, some happy moments in between, but these happy moments pale in comparison to the sad and painful moments that we'll all experience, and then at the end we die.

What's the point of commencing this journey when you already know that it has a bleak end?

Thanks,
But it's not actually about me.
I believe in the afterlife.
I also believe in doing good and living a good life. But assuming I can be convinced there is no afterlife, why should I go on living, I can just decide to die because the end doesn't justify the means.
Well, to be honest; there's no reason to exist. We are simply a mesh of cells, a mound of atoms in an uncaring universe.

But then again; people feel that is too bleak and find purpose for living.

These purposes, although not convincing from a logical standpoint; tend to stick with people.

That's why I said there are no answers, only possible reasons.

First this is not about others, this is about " self " ( note not me )
If dying today and dying in 50 years makes no difference, and I have been suffering and it doesn't seem like it will get better any soon, why not die now, if I have the resources to end it as I am so sure , there is nothing beyond that. This could alsovapply to a fulfilled man who feels there is nothing left for him as he has seen it all.
if you believe life is all about yourself then why not move to an island and live alone without communication with anybody?

if you believe life is all about you and you alone then there is no point trying to convince you.. because you will feel everything is supposed to center on you..
no insult intended .

but if you realise that life isn't all about you and you alone, then my points will make a lil sense

You are missing the point, its not about me, but about self, "self" in this aspect is everyone.
Am not talking about what you can do for others, why or why not.
What I mean is if 1am is equal to 11pm, why go through the stress, when you are fully aware it is not worth it .
It might be rosy for you and you feel, you can impact positively on humanity.
But there are people who are way, way ,off they know the have no impact what so ever, and they know there is no afterlife, what then keeps them going, when eachbstep grows the pain.

That is not what I meant.
My main question still remains what is the essence of living and in that process living a moral life.
A car is built, with the end product being to be driven.
Food is cooked with the end process being to be eaten.
Animals copulate with the end process being reproduction.
People marry and reproduce but to me that is no purpose .
I believe I have a purpose in life, but if after everything when I die , all about me ( not my generation ) why should I continue.
As for the making enemies with society, what if I can get away with it till death ,what will be the essence for my victims if they feel death is not a justifiable punishment.
It is simple, the main purpose of life is for you to breed and keep the cycle going.

sorry i didn't reply earlier..
you're talking about self... yes.. its almost the same thing... self is developed around and by other people either for good or for bad... and that self affects the people it develops from.. so if you're talking about the benefit to self, it becomes tied down with other people.. naturally when self makes people happy, self becomes happy too... as long as its not at his/her detriment.. there is a joy.. a warmth.. a feeling that comes with making people happy. and whatever good works you do, will follow you to the grave and follow your loved ones.. except that ‘self' has no loved one.... the fulfilment of self comes greatly from the fulfilment of others... cuz as self develops, the development is influenced by others and also affects the others. that's why i earlier said life isn't all about self.. its more like a colony... making things work

Why have fun when you know the fun will still end?
Just enjoy the journey, the present, the now.

And are we enjoying this present? The present presents it's share of pain and despair, which in most cases eclipses the little ephemeral fun. Given the unremitting presence of the agonizing existential understanding of the futility of our lives and the acknowledgement of it's bleak end and the immanate vanity of the actions that precede it, the present will always be a sad, painful experience, interspersed with horrifying uncertainties.

There are the good times and the bad..it's like a video game. Just enjoy it. You lose some and win some.

From your posts, you may just be suicidal.

Yes I understand all that, satisfaction from doing things, but that is in "part".
In totality no satisfaction, meaning the 1am and 11 pm offers same. For someone undergoing tribulation, why keep on enduring ,when you have this idea.

I say this because I feel this is why people become suicidal, I have read of things and I intend exploring more.

Thanks for your continuous time, as I expect more from you.

I am not. I am just being honest.

oh.. oh..
i understand you now.
people who are suicidal... if indeed there is no afterlife, were kinda afraid.. i would have called them cowards but it'll look insultive.

when you get into a battle ring, you either win or lose... if you runaway, you lose.. succsss in life isn't about the person who had everything easy and came out successful at the end.. no.. success in life is when you've faced tribilations, been knocked down, beaten etc.. but you still win in the end..

no problem is ever solved by running away from it.. people who run away from their problems by committing suicide are only accepting their loss... i prefer fighting the battle till the end.. the feeling of victory is one of the best feelings in the world.. believe me

I am simply trying to find the essence of life and living from a logical perspective not a religious angle.
And am seeing it more of as a destinationless journey. If there is no afterlife, why am I putting effort to be good, if both the good and the bad both have the same ending.
to answer your question in a succinct manner: we came here to learn. by the way BNTH is my favourite group artist since 1999, are you a fan too
Re: No Afterlife? by jonbellion(m): 4:27pm On Nov 22, 2016
Lol
Beforedeath is life
Afterlife is death
Fixed!
I wonder if there was no life before birth why would there be life after death
Isn't that asking for too much
The afterlife is a coping mechanism for the fear of our mortality
But no need to fear
Rather just make your best out of your short stay in our universe wink
Just take your time on the ride cool

If we are here to learn , where are we to use the knowledge if after death there is nothing.
Yes am an ardent follower of the BTNH ever since, I heard the crossroads.

Actually this thread is on assuming there is nothing after death.
There will be more series of questions to come up based on what I pick up here
I will still do a thread on if there really is an afterlife
All I ask is for both contributors and observers to participate with a non biased atmosphere.

I have already gotten some answers , but I believe there is room to know more.
Thanks.
