Twenty-nine

“Good morning,” he greeted cheerily as she walked out of the gate.

Omotola didn’t go towards him, didn’t slow down her strides, just said, “Good morning, Dayo.”

He caught up with her in a moment’s time, her much-shorter legs no match for his long strides. Falling into step beside her, he asked, “Where are you off to?”

“Nowhere important,” she muttered and told her jittery stomach to calm down. Much to her own chagrin, it wasn’t just his presence that was making her feel trapped. It was her body’s, her heart’s reaction to him that was eating away at her.

Even now, her heartbeat was quickening. Being near Dayo set her blood to boiling and her nerves dancing. His scent. His voice. His nearness. All combined to make her want with an ache she knew would never really leave her.

And to have him close by was a torture. Maybe he saw what he was doing to her and enjoyed it immensely. She risked a gaze at him, his smile was too friendly for her liking.

“I’d like to know exactly where nowhere important is,” he said.

“Mt. Sinai Hospital,” she told him with a wave.

“Who’s at Mt. Sinai Hospital?”

“My mom,” she mumbled staring down the road for a taxi.

“Great then, I’ll drive you there.”

Her eyes closed into slits as she regarded him, “why?”

“Well you’ll need a ride there and there’s no reason you should get a taxi when I can drop you off. Also I’ll get a chance to meet my future mother-in-law,” he smiled sweetly at her as she turned at him. “We will kill two birds with one stone.”

“No.” She shook her head. “You are not going anywhere near my mother.”

“Why not?” he asked softly.

A sizzling fizz of heat began to fire deep down in her body. That there was something else going on here as well as the conversation they were involved in, made her flicker a wary scan of his face. He was leading her somewhere and she did not want to look at where that might be.

“I would be too ashamed to present you to her,” she said.

And hit a raw nerve. Omotola watched the warm possessive golden light in his eyes turn off like a switch. He drew back from her as if she’d physically struck him. It was like watching a dangerous animal take a serious blow it had not been prepared for, and she
