This is the most stupid individual that occupied the office of the minister of Finance in the history of Nigeria.

Every growing economy needs import waivers for critical sectors that will stimulate growth and create employment.
Yes, are supposed to help. But they have been abused MASSIVELY in Nigeria, cheating the federation out of uncountable billions in revenue. Heck, even churches were getting waivers in the not-too-distant past!

Our criteria for granting waivers should be thoroughly investigated and overhauled.

If corruption is why we are in the mess we are in today, why is the whole economy worse off now that you are fighting corruption than it was when corruption "reigned" ?
Simple. Our economy is in a mess because the price of Oil - the commodity that brings the vast majority of our revenue as a nation - has cratered.
Our current Govt is doing a poor job of getting us out of the mess, but the mess itself was inevitable after years of waste and poor development.
It's not rocket science.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has said waiver of tax and charges granted by the government to some companies induce corruption in Nigeria.

The minister also said Nigeria’s current economic mess was largely caused by corruption.

Speaking at a national conference on corruption in Abuja at the weekend, Adeosun, who defined corruption as “abuse of entrusted power for private gain”, added that corruption was inimical to national development.

The minister who was represented by Mrs Patience Oniha, Head Efficiency Unit of the ministry also said many Nigerians had accepted corruption as a way of life.

She said “waivers and allocations unintentionally induced corruption.”

Adeosun further said poor record systems, weak judicial systems and weak internal audit also contributed to corruption in the country.

Weak anti-corruption institutions and non-enforcement of sanctions or punishment on officials accused of corruption and pervading poverty are fuelling corruption in Nigeria, she added.

In May 2015, the Senate reportedly uncovered a N447 billion waiver fraud that involved big local firms importing rice, sugar and other products. The fraud was allegedly done through import duty waivers, concessions and grants by agencies of the Federal Government. The report then recommended that some firms who imported rice with the waivers and grant remit over N23billion, while others for sugar imports were to remit over N48billion.

This is no blame game, my dearest corruption-loving brother, it's a statement of facts. The gale-hanging lady of GEJ supervised the deals as minister of finance/looting. If we don't know where our problems started from how can we solve it?

I hope this your comments are not statements approved by your principal Atiku? And it's just you doing your sycophancy as usual?

Are you minding those dumb folks? By critical industries, we should be referring to machineries and equipments that aren't produced locally. Raw materials and finished products like rice and sugar are in no way part of critical industries.

Very incompetent indeed!
It's out of their incompetence that made them to take solace in blame games. It's only this administration that keeps blaming their predecessor as if other past leaders before GEJ was not corrupt. These people need to be reminded that they were not voted for to come and blame their predecessor but to help fix the country. That's what leader do.

Wow! Guess you didn't know this. Maybe you should check out Vaswani Brothers. They are the owner of Stallion Group. They are billionaire in dollars who made most of their money in Nigeria seeking for import waiver. They import all the know foreign rice like stallion, mama gold etc

This guys were on import waiver for years that waives more than 1 billion naira in tax every day of their shipment. They continued to invade tax when the waiver elapsed in 2014 so much so that the Nigeria Custom service slammed them a fine of N17b which they never paid. Sadly, Jonathan cancels the debt just before leaving office. That is what the Minister is talking about.

My friends and I are having a good laugh because of your opinion. Now in 2015, Soludo wrote this beautiful article about the amount we lost to import waivers, the Finance ministry didn't deny, the figures were very clear. Now please tell us how that has helped our economy?

If you need a link to that article, mention me.

Only if you are aware of the volume of this two items were being consumed in Nigeria both domestic and industrially, then you will know they are critical.

Don't be daft! The economy is worse off now because oil was $115 and now $40. Not to mention consistent production outages! Buhari is simply unlucky, though he hasn't handled things as well as he could have.

Stop making dumb posts, the economy is messed up because $80 billion of foreign investments left the country due to Buhari's recklessness, oil has sold for less in the recent past without this attendant teeth-grinding hardship.

You can't talk about waivers without bringing up Dangote. The fact that Africa's richest man comes from a country with Africa's poorest should be an example of the dangers of arbitrary waivers and concessions.

Madam Fin Sec, enough about problems, you don't need to be an archaeologist to know the cause of our problems.
Nigerians now want solutions.
