Start with those lovable ones that don't grow, though they're expensive. Try Maltese, Lhasa Apso or Shih Tzu (my favourite). Trust me, once you hold one, your fears would vanish.

Those Lhasas can be terrorists tho

Like most peeps already mentioned here, start with a puppy. By puppy, am making reference to a 3 or 4 month old dog. Do bear in mind, they can't bite you.

The only way to overcome your phobia, is to face it.

Get a Lhasa or Samoyeed they are small breeds(Lap dogs). Dogs are still Man's best/loyal Friend

There are various ways or techniques you can self apply and practice .. but I seriously recommend you go online and read about SYSTEMATIC DESENSITIZATION.
download PDF files, take your time to read, digest, understand and practice. you might need someone to help you out, maybe a friend or family member.

You'll learn a lot.
