Yep! I found it. The name of the book is Tahreem Aalaatu-t-tarab. By the way, I don't have the book itself ooo,
just a magazine that referenced it. An-Naseehah April/May 2012

Like Ibn Taymiyah said, It is upon everyone who is not a scholar to follow the consensus of the scholars.

I'd love to know the general consensus on this. For Shaykh Fawzaan to have said that, means the scholars
probably differ on the issue of "singing". I'd really appreciate our knowledgeable asaatiz here helping us
shed more light on this

But we all know music is not permissible anyway. There is a consensus on that

AbuHammaad:
But eeerm...

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ood. Abu’l-Sahbaa’ said: I asked Ibn Mas’ood about the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), ‘“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks’ [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other god, this means singing – and he repeated it three times. It was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that this means singing

There is no contradiction between the interpretation of “idle talk” as meaning singing and the interpretation of it as meaning stories of the Persians and their kings, and the kings of the Romans, and so on, such as al-Nadr ibn al-Haarith used to tell to the people of Makkah to distract them from the Qur’aan. Both of them are idle talk. Hence Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “Idle talk” is falsehood and singing

But what do I know
when you say singing, do you mean writing out a song with full lyrics and deciding the tone and things? *which is a waste of time anyways*

Singing to me means singing out a random words. Not necessarily like a song song.

It would be interesting to find out if the scholars differed on it.

To be honest, I really do not know.

Singing out random words could be melodious too you know

I know a lot of scholars read out poems for educative purposes.

poems are also read out in form of singing and i believe these are the kind of things shaykh fawzawn and his student shaykh munajid(owner of islamqa) mean, altho i don't fully agree with them on the dancing issue, but as shaykh uthaymeen said "when you get a different result from what the scholars(upon the sunnah) has, try the method from another perspective", still doing that.

I fear some people on NL. He said Music is pornography, which means people that study music are ponography actors. Lol grin

The dude was mixing music with the singer/musician to judge the art of music, music can be use to promote negative effect to the people just like religion.

Whether you’re performing it or listening to it, music can increase your happiness (as well as the happiness of those around you.)

No wonder people who listen to music or musicians are more happier.
