The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, Monday, vowed to shut down the health sector with effect from January 2, 2017, should the Federal Government fail to implement all the outstanding agreements with the union.

It described the planned industrial action as painful but the last option, having exhausted all windows of dialogue.

President of NARD, Dr. Onyebuchi John Ugochukwu, who addressed a press briefing in Enugu equally directed members to start putting on “black ward gown” as a sign of death of health facilities in the country.

Ugochukwu, who was flanked by the association’s national treasurer and public relations officer, Dr. Ugwuoke Aloy Ifedinso and Dr. Asinobi Ugoeze chided the Federal Ministry of health for allowing the sector to deteriorate into a very sorry and unmanageable state.

He, therefore, declared that: “all agreements of the July 14th 2016 mediation meeting with the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara must be implemented immediately.

“The Ministry of health should be responsible enough to honour such high level agreement reached by all the parties.

“If they fail to do so, we are directing all our members to proceed on indefinite action with effect from January 2, 2016. We have already notified all the appropriate bodies on the ultimatum which will expire on the said day.”

In a 15-point resolution, which was a fallout of the NARD’s National Executive Council Meeting held in Abuja, he called on the Federal Government to “as a matter of urgency, institute mechanisms to stem the rot in the health sector and ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all Nigerians.”

He decried the poor budgetary allocation to the health ministry, noting that adequate provision and planning should be made for both manpower and infrastructural development in subsequent budgets.

While the expressing sadness over the number of deaths recorded in this year’s orientation exercise for members of the National Youth Service Corps, the NARP President called on the government to ensure adequate funding, staffing and equipping of NYSC clinics and other healthy outstations.

He stressed that the Federal Government should put in place more articulate and accessible emergency response protocols to reduce the impact of such similar disasters in future.

On the bad discriminatory treatment against its members, the NARD demanded that “resident doctors are pensionable and the deduction and remittance of pension contribution should be fully entrenched in all institutions in line with The Pension Reform Act 2014.

“Resident doctors must be enrolled into the IPPIS platform without further delay.”

“The December 2015 salaries of our members in FMC Owerre must be paid immediately”, he further stated, adding that government’s implementation of “no work no pay” rule on doctors was a grave injustice.

The NARD President said whereas other professional bodies which embarked on industrial action had their salaries paid, it was strange that the “no work no pay” rule was only being applied on doctors.

Should doctor go on strike? Most of us will say no but if you've been to most public hospital and see for yourself the extent of neglect then you'll know we're in for a long thing. If occasional strike can help correct something's maybe we need it after all. The man at the helm of affair is a dullard who after budgeting billions of naira for Aso rock clinic (more than the budgetary allocation for all government own teaching hospital) would still travel to UK for ear infection and also have Kyari travel out to treat cold. Since I was born I have never seen an hypocrite like Buhari. If Buhari knows the number of people that will suffer for this strike he will make sure they don't go on strike but what do I know. He is more concern for his cows than Nigerians.

Let me advice you young doctors, write PLAB or USMLE and leave Nigeria when you still can. When you all leave, the government eyes go clear. Nigeria is a time bomb with a teke teke movement already in it last seconds, waiting to explode.

Employ new ones from where? Ghana? Even ghanian doctors are better paid and work in a more conducive environment .. For your information Nigerian doctors are the least paid world over that's why Nigerian doctors are leaving for Namibia... imagine? Namibia. ..

In luth in 2016, over 20 doctors have resigned... and more are leaving....

Resident doctors and strike are like bread and butter. I knew there would be strike considering the antecedence of the Minister of Health to the resident doctors when he was at UCH.

Many will wonder why doctors always go on strike. This is the simple truth. Govt holds meetings with them and both parties come to an agreement. While the doctors will honor their own part of the agreement, government will not. Weeks, months and even years will pass and still the government will act like there was no agreement in the first place.

I implore well meaning Nigerians to quietly ask and know what is happening in govt hospitals.
No light in my center for nearly a month nw due to electricity debt to d DISCO,pharmacy is empty,I'm talking abt an emergency room in a very busy hospital.No oxygen in d emergency,even ordinary nebulisar for asthmatic patient is unavailable as d old one has broken down.
U cannot suction an accident victim cos d inverter cannot carry d suction machine,pharmacy is empty and in d heat of d moment,if U shout at d pharmacist,if he's patient enuf,he'll remind U that management /govt is owing all their suppliers.
Imagine trying to set a line on a HIV patient and d blood accidentally spilt on U and U remember U are taking this risk with 3 months salary arrears?

Na so we dey do am every year o. .. December 2015 salary was paid in March 2016.
