7 Advantages Of Attending A Public University In Nigeria by Dapromzy333(m): 11:16am On Dec 20, 2016
Here in Nigeria, there are two categories of universities,
— Public Universities
— Private Universities
But my focus is on the former. According to statistics by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ,over 95% of Nigerian admission seekers fill in for Public universities with Federal schools having the highest chunk, they has to be a reason for this one-sided imbalance, the reasons are not far fetched. Simply because there are lots of benefits attached to attending a public university. Here are the benefits :-

1.Rigorous Entry Process :-No doubt, when seeking admission to a public university, you’re faced with a lot of competition, and difficult post ume exams, this in turn brings out the best in you as a student, because you’re in a position where it has now become survival of the fittest. Compared to private universities where one can easily gain admission and probably makes a student become lazy. This makes public schools admit the best students.

2.Quality Academic Standards :Like it or not, public schools have the best facilities for teaching, research, projects, practicals and so on. You as a student tend to benefit a lot from this, because the better the school standard, the better your standard as a student.

3.Acceptance of Certificates : This cannot be over-emphasized,a graduate of a public university will always stand a better chance against a private university graduate in the labour market, because it is verified that public school students go through rigorous teaching and they sweat to get good grades and a good result. A graduate of UI will always stand a better chance against a graduate of Babcock.

4. Healthy Competition :In an average public university, where they are many students in a department, as a student, you’re faced with competition from your coursemates, and you’re faced with having to pass that strict lecturer’s course. this makes the students read regularly, read in the library, read at night and even attend all lectures. In other terms,it builds you as a student, unlike in private university where the students are few so the competition is not high and one can easily scale through.

5. Research :Most mind-blowing research are being conducted by public universities, research which leads to breakthrough in a particular problem ranging from the medical field to engineering and technology. We’ve read news of ABU engineering students making drones,UBTH medical staff conducting kidney transplant, Unizik students making a mini bus and many others. This can only be achieved through quality research and analysis and thesis, not just by classroom teaching. In the business field, the research could proffer solutions to Nigeria’s economic and financial problems and proffer economic advices too.

6.Variety of Courses :In public universities, you have a huge bouquet of courses to choose from, whether in arts or science. Compared to private unis, how many of them offer Medicine and Surgery, few! how many of them offer Engineering ,few! and other sensitive courses like Geology, Radiography and so on. This is definitely a benefit on the side of public university students.
You’ll always wanna study your dream course and therefore you have to pursue your dream, don’t you?

7. Quality of Teachers : I’ve seen a lot of highly qualified teachers in public schools, you find a lot of professors, associate professors,MSc holders and even Emeritus. This tells you that definitely, quality education will be delivered as compared to the private universities which have limited or no professors. Therefore a student stand to gain a lot from their highly qualified lecturers.

No offence to those in private schools, they are good schools too,but one must be better than the other. Ironically, some of the best schools in the world are private, from the Ivy League institutions like Princeton University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the Oxbridge institutions of Oxford University and Cambridge University.

But here locally, the public schools remains the best options as most private schools lack adequate infrastructure and course accreditation, some are still very young and not well grounded.. compare that to Oxford University which is over 3 centuries old,the oldest university in the English-speaking world,or to Havard University which was established in the 18th century .. So the experience and history of a university plays a huge role in it’s development.
And our public universities have been there long enough to earn these acknowledgement.

1 is totally invalid, u don't have to fast till u become a bag of bone or kill urself before u're offered admission. We just take solace in the undue rigour candidates pass 2ru during admission period.

3 is unfair. why compare the best university in Nigeria which accommodates less than 5% to babcock. Why not otuoke to babcock, Bowen to LAUTECH, Madonna to OOU and Celeb to LASU. Let CU match UI. They have proved to be institutions of great repute over the years.

Our private universities are just germinating, when they are fully grown, UI and co would run. Just project CU's rank by 2030 if development keeps up at this same pace.

Public schools have a very poor educational standard.
They have no facilities compared to private schools. They say private schools produce lots of first class and 2:1 graduates, this is because they don't have sadist lectures who fail students for no good reasons, their environment is conducive for learning, they have great facilities and also, they have up to date curriculum unlike the 20th century curriculum we use in our public schools.
We thrive abroad and in our private institutions because the educational environment is close to perfect, not because of any other reason.

P.S:
OP , where did you learn that Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is an Ivy League school?
Lemme guess, your over rated piece of poop Nigerian public school.

I stopped here.

Your article is riddled with ignorance. Oxford and Cambridge universities are PUBLIC universities.

As for the other points, there are not really factual. Moreover, with such comparison I see daily. How many Nigerian schools are among the top in the QS, ARWU and THE Times rankings? Top 1000? None.

What you should be advocating is for we to hold our government accountable across all levels so as to ensure delivery of quality education to her citizens at an affordable rate.

Trash post by OP.
Public schools like to pull their private counterpart down with all manner of funny excuses. From my work experience so far, private uni grads outclass the public uni grads by a really wide margin.
Lot's of first class in public uni don't understand a good percentage of their work. Lectures dictate notes beyond their capacity to students, the sharp students who can reproduce it in exam hall i.e cram n reproduce, passes.

All na hogwash, those guys from private Universities can beat u hands down, who said u must suffer before u gain admission, most companies are now employing more graduates from private universities and with the way things are going and d way Nigerian govt is funding education, we may soon witness what is happening in public primary and secondary school, where sound education can only now be obtained in private schools.
What do u say about sadist lectures who will categorically tell u that no student will graduate with first class in a particular dept. in public universities, I attended a public university but op, wetin my eye see, I no fit just write down.

In summary, Public universities are better because they are more difficult on one hand and they have better facilities/instructors on the other hand.

There are two kinds of students: Good ones and not so good ones. Both categories exist in public and private universities. However most private universities are new. Babcock was one of the first licensed private universites in Nigeria and graduated its first set in 2003. Thats 13 years ago.12 years experience if you deduct NYSC. Give it time. We will judge by products in the next 8 years or so. Meanwhile since you mentioned Babcock, let me educate you. Babcock has signed up with New Horizons and if you are in the Computer department you are encouraged to take professional exams as a requirement. If you pass Comptia Exams for example, it is global. whether you are in Nigeria or USA. Babcock has also partnered with ICAN to align their accounting program with that of ICAN. Babcocks MBA is under AACSB accreditation which no public university in Nigeria has. Even LBS just got theirs last month compared to schools such as UCT Business school in south africa that have triple MBA accrediation(EQUIUS,AMBA and AACSB). Some Babcock Graduates at the age of 22 have Bsc, Msc, Nysc and at least one professional qualification; education is fast and there is no strike at all. April By Kunbi is a babcock product. These two guys in the link below are babcock products.

http://pulse.ng/tech/paystack-fintech-firm-secures-1-3-million-dollars-in-seed-funding-id5914952.html

Go to KPMG,Interswitch,Maionone,PWC etc, its like a babcock reunion in those places even though babcocks annual graduate volume is like one tenth of that like schools such as UNILAG.Even HR Executives are now giving advantage to private uni graduates. If u dont know, ask around.

I can down grade all public unis in Nigeria from now till kingdom come. Mention one MBA Program in any public university in Nigeria that makes any sense. Thanks to Lagos Business School who are the leading light and they are private.

All in All, Education is meant to be relevant and not difficult. Whats the point of celebrating as is common in public unis that no one has had first class in a department for decades and they see that as excellence because it is difficult ? Whereas people who write the text books in those courses overseas have people graduating first class every year in their own department.

This comparison is worthless because it does not hold water.

I finished from private University and I was in UI for MSC Economics and most of us from private university was able to pass with high grade while does from State and Federal University did not perform better.

It depends on the student motivational force to excel and his ambition.
