Nigerian engineers has built roads, bridges, industrial Estates, high-rises, stadiums and now one of them is embarking on building some of the projects in the Refinery in Lagos.

An indigenous company, Integrated Oil and Gas Ltd., has been given initial license to commence preliminary work for a 20,000 capacity modular refinery in one of the islands on the coast of Lagos.

Like I said before, what we consider slums elsewhere is what you consider normal housing and that's why you think you have no slums. All cities in the world have markets - having marketd is no excuse for being the dirtiest city in the world.
Yes, having a market is no excuse i agree but lack of sanitation is not enough reason to classify a place as a slum. You see those market areas in Onitsha, people do not live there, so they tend not to take sanitation in those places serious.
However, their state govt has really done a lot and i will show u pictures of the new sanitized Onitsha market.

One thing u must understand is that a full blown slum and a low income area are not the same thing, although they may look similar sometimes. A place, no matter how much sanitation it lacks, as long as most of the residents there have an acess to modern toilet facilities and a sewage, paved motorable roads, appartment styled houses built of proper concrete blocks or bricks, such place can never be classified as a slum.

Take a look at the so called Agegunle for yourself, it just cannot be compared to the likes of Kibera. See storey buildings, clear cut roads e.t.c, just that they are in bad conditions, however the current governor is doing a lot to repair their roads as u can see in the last picture.

Nairobi's slums are just too terrible, numerous and large in size and that is why they receive more world and foreign attention.

This thread has become too repetitive.

Here is why I Like Kenya.
We have accepted the issues we have and are working to solve them while Nigerians still have their heads in the sand and keep talking of how great they are yet this does not reflect on the common Nigerian.

Let us looks at some things. I gave very practical applications of how the government of Kenya has adopted technology and is even experimenting with some technologies that not many countries tries in the world are willing to at the moment e. G. Blockchain. Right now I can do a land registry search, company registration, driver license renewal, submit tax returns, get insurance etc all online. @ianSweet replies by producing a list of Nigerians who hold patents by creating new technologies. The sad fact is that for all people in the list she produced, there is NO single technology that has been adopted in anyway to create a successful startup or has changed the life of any ordinary Nigerian in Nigeria or wherever. But look at Kenya, Mpesa brought financial services to even the most marginalized communities living in the desert, mkopo solar provides power to people that have not been reached by the national grid etc. In a country whose 70% of the population lives below 1Usd per day we have the most successful startups being online shopping instead of agriculture... Lol

.
Hehehehe! When it comes to Technology, Nigeria is far far ahead of Kenya.

@bolded is very funny. Land is not owned by the Federal government, Lands are owned by the state government.

Renewal of driving license can be done online here. grin

You say there are no single technology that has changed the lifes of Nigerians, My friend, you are ignorant of Nigeria. grin

9 Tech Companies building Nigeria’s future

Over the course of the last 5 years, we have seen the rise of many technology powered companies trying to address Nigerian problems with their unique solutions. While many have failed in this quest, a good number have diversified or pivoted their solutions to sustain the business and keep food on their families’ tables.

Looking ahead at the next 5 years to come, here are some Nigerian tech companies we think are solving real problems with unique solutions which might stand the test of time.

Andela (Education)

andela-wall

Year Founded: 2014

Co-founders: Jeremy Johnson, Iyin Aboyeji, Ian Carnevale and Christina Sass.

Andela is redefining education as we know it. By providing (optional) housing fellows and paying them to learn, rather than the other way around, the startup is looking to train 100,000 budding developers to world class status, in the space of 10 years.

Andela will no doubt will stand the test of time in the Nigerian business space having demonstrated a sustainable business model even before raising over $10 million in a series Series A funding round led by Spark Capital.

Konga (Retail)

konga-warehouse

Year Founded: 2012

Founder: Sim Shagaya

The eCommerce ecosystem in Nigeria is gradually growing and we have seen a lot of promising platforms emerge over the last 4 years. Among the major drivers of the eCommerce boom in Nigeria, Konga stands out the most, having raised over $78 million in investment since inception.

MainOne Cable (Internet Connectivity)

mainOne (54 of 58)

Year Founded: 2010

Founder: Funke Opeke

Started in 2008 by Funke Opeke, a seasoned telecommunications executive with vast experience both home and abroad, MainOne has grown to become a leading provider of innovative telecom services and network solutions for businesses in West Africa. MDX-i, MainOne’s Tier III Data Centre, is the first of its kind in West Africa.

Gamsole (Gaming)

gamsole

Year Founded: 2013

Founder: Abiola Olaniran

Olaniran started Gamsole in April of 2013 with the primary aim of building local games with a global appeal. Within 6 months of launch, the company had over 3 million game downloads on the Windows Store.

That number has grown to over 10 million, in the course of the past 2 years, and it doesn’t show any sign of dwindling soon, especially with anticipated titles such as Gidi Run in the works.

Jobberman (Employment)

jobberman

Year Founded: 2009

Founders: Ayodeji Adewunmi, Opeyemi Awoyemi, and Olalekan Olude

Synonymous with Job Hunting in Nigeria, Jobberman is easily West Africa’s biggest job search engine and aggregator, with over 300k unique visits daily.

For a tech company that started in 2009, at least a year earlier than the widely-acclaimed advent of the local tech ecosystem, Jobberman is still going strong and showing no signs of repenting.

Africa Courier Express (Logistics)

african-courier-express

Year Founded: 2013

Founders: Tunde Kehinde & Ercin Eksin

When two of the founding fathers of Nigerian eCommerce team up to solve the industry’s persistent logistics challenge, you know they mean serious business.

Since its launch late 2013, ACE has established physical presence in 5 cities across Nigeria, shipped to over 100,000 customers, raised well over $850k fudning and is already catching the eye of foreign investors.

Printivo (Print Production)

printivo (122 of 122)

Year Founded: 2014

Founders: Oluyomi Ojo, Ibukun Oloyede & Ayodeji Adeogun.

Printivo has managed to carve a niche for itself with an efficient web-to-print model that helps SMEs do small-scale print production at very affordable prices.

Founded by a team of seasoned experts who are smart enough to integrate tech into the business, Printivo is definitely on course to change the face of Print Production in Nigeria.

Hotels.ng (Hospitality)

new-Hotels.ng-office-yaba_feature

Year Founded: 2012

Founder: Mark Essien

Hotels.ng is an online hotels booking platform that is changing the way Nigerians think about travelling. One of the most notably successful tech companies in Nigeria that is solely managed by a CEO with a technical background, the startup ran on internally generated revenue for over a year before recently raising $1.2 million in a Series A funding round.

Interswitch (FinTech)

techpoint (1 of 2)

Year Founded: 2002.

Founder: Mitchell Elegbe.

Interswitch started generating revenue from the first day of business. The company has grown to over N30.8 billion revenue, as at March 2015 year end, with 93% recurring revenue according to a report by the CEO Mitchell Elegbe.

There is no doubt that Interswitch will continue to sour high in the Nigerian payment market where it currently does 3.9 billion transactions per year.

20 Startups to know in the Nigerian Health Tech Space

By Nigeria Health Watch Admin on August 30, 2016 Technology
Editor’s Note: The Future of Health Conference II is 23 days away!! As we at Nigeria Health Watch work to deliver this year’s conference themed “Health Meets Tech: From Innovation to Implementation,” it is only natural that we begin to take a look at the health tech space in Nigeria. Our guest contributor this week is Dr. Ikpeme Neto, Internal medicine physician turned digital health entrepreneur, who through his start-up ‘Wella Health’ is working on ways to provide cost-effective technological solutions to improve quality of health care and patient engagement in Africa. He is the Editor of Digital Health Nigeria, and highlights 20 start-ups everyone should pay attention to in the health tech space. The article first ran in Digital Health Nigeria’s Medium Blog, and has been edited and re-published with permission.

There are phenomenal things going on in the tech startup space currently in Nigeria. Most recently, Andela, a talent accelerator founded in Nigeria and the U.S raised a big round of funding from the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. There have been similar fundraising and huge milestone successes in Fintech and other consumer tech startups.

The Nigerian health tech space on the other hand hasn’t received much attention from investors or the media. Some token mentions pop up now and again but nothing concrete. One may think that there aren’t startups doing much in the health space. My experience over the last two years as a health tech founder in Nigeria suggests otherwise. In that time I’ve come across more than a handful of startups doing great work in a difficult yet rewarding digital health space.

Here are 20 of many such startups I’ve come across. I have categorized the startups by their primary targets; Information on what they do, channels and business models is drawn from the respective websites or social media accounts and my own inference. I’ve avoided companies that operate as consultancies to focus more on startups with specific products or services. This is what I found:

It's not Photoshop, that's an article like you can see with two photos, one of prostitutes and the other in the background is the slums. Funny you can't understand simple things like how articles are written. Speaking of old photos - aren't you the same guys recycling old photos of Kibera here? ......and considering Abuja is a new city, how old can those photos be? Stop putting your head in the sand. I have posted several photos, nor just the one you quoted and these are fresh new articles from the internet. More Abuja slums for you.
SOURCE: Wikipedia,UN-habitat,World bank,Amnesty international (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_slums_in_Kenya, https://www.amnesty.nl/sites/default/files/public/rap_kenia_the_unseen_majority.pdf,http://unhabitat.org/gltn-visits-mathare-slum-in-nairobi/)

Funny guys, keep deluding your selves (New pictures of kibera bellow)....beside mathare is even bigger than kibera and no body is talikng about it why, Also their other slums bigger than Kibera?

mathare

Mathare is a collection of slums in Nairobi, Kenya with a population of approximately 500,000 people; the population of Mathare Valley alone, the oldest of the slums that make up Mathare, is 180,000 people. Mathare is the home of football team Mathare United of the MYSA.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathare

new kibera 2016
new kibera 2016
mathare slum (over 500000 people cry)

Kawangware slum (300000 people )
According to the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census, Kawangware's population was 133,286 people at this time. It is estimated that 65% of the population are children and youths. Most inhabitants live on less than $1 (although they earn in shillings) a day and unemployment is high; many are self-employed traders. There is a diversity of ethnic backgrounds

Mukuru (bigger than kibera what!!!!! cry) kenya is shit i swear !!!!!

Mukuru is one of the biggest slum in Nairobi, its estimated to be habitat of about 700,000 people in the different village in the slums, it stretches along the Nairobi Ngong river, situated on waste lands in the industrial area of the city between the Outer Ring Road and the North Airport Road and mombasa road, in three different constituencies Embakasi south, Makadara and Starehe constituencies. Mukuru have villages Mukuru kwa Reuben, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Sinai, Paradise, Jamaica, Kingstone, Mariguini, Futata Nyayo and Kayaba.

Korogocho

Korogocho is one of the largest slum neighbourhoods of Nairobi, Kenya. Home to 150,000 to 200,000 people pressed into 1.5 square kilometres, northeast of the city centre, Korogocho was founded as a shanty town on the then outskirts of the city.[1][2]

In 2009 it was estimated to be the fourth largest slum in Nairobi, after Kibera, Mathare Valley and Mukuru kwa Njenga.

calculation: Korogocho (200000)+Mukuru (500000)+Kawangware(300000)+mathare (600000)+ kibera(600000)+Kiambiu(60000)+others{Huruma,Majengo, Matopeni,Pumwani,Nyalenda........(740000= 3millions people leaving ins slums

3.millions(slums dwellers -Total population (3.36 million)= 336000 out of slums
cry
conclution : 92% of poulation leaves in slums while only 8% leaves moderately ...wow cry cry

Desperate fool.

Abuja is not even as old as this zinc roof and they never said that was Abuja.

You mean those places are better than Kibera in photo below? Girl, you're very useless. Look at Kibera below and compare it with your Ajegunle
All I see is slums everywhere in the pics you posted. Look around the pics very well. We even have the video.

Ajegunle, bariga, badia etc are not slums. They have bad sanitation and old building's. The are not even poor people like those in Kibera.

would you say Nairobi is better than Lagos, or Kenya is better than Nigeria at large?
There is no blanket answer to that as it depends on who you ask. Personally, Nairobi favours me because of what am into as l have more access to opportunities because it is a hub when it comes to what am into.

I live with a certain measure of certainty as l take so many things here for granted. My stay in Nairobi also favours some relatives back in Lagos as l use my local contacts to help them market products that are local to Nigerians but yield more when sold in Kenya as there are stuffs that sells locally for N500 but sells easily for $18 in Nairobi and it is no big deal to the buyers.

There are many Nigerians coming over for studies as one can get a bachelors degree in 2 yrs 8months and after graduation, can relocate to other parts of the world easily and legally (if you know your way)

There are aspects of the Nigerian life, l will never exchange for anything because it keeps one grounded.

It is not about competition but we should have an open mind to benefit from each other as a lot of stuffs l shared in the Agric section, l picked up from Kenyans who were willing to share knowledge just as l have shared with some Kenyans how to achieve better results applying the Nigerian way of doing them.

This thread has become too repetitive.

Here is why I Like Kenya.
We have accepted the issues we have and are working to solve them while Nigerians still have their heads in the sand and keep talking of how great they are yet this does not reflect on the common Nigerian.

. Majority of large companies in Nigeria have a lot of foreign shareholding including their iconic banks. Majority of construction projects in Nigeria like most developing African countries are by the Chinese but Nigeria is very quick to admonish Kenya when we have any debt or chinese funded operation :/ The level of hypocrisy is appaling.
@bolded is another lie.
