Pilot reveals the REAL reason flight attendants dim the plane's lights before take-off and landing - and it's not what you thought
UK pilot revealed reason cabin lights are dimmed for take-off and landing
Patrick Smith said dimming the lights allows your eyes to adjust to darkness
If an emergency does occur and lights go out you 'will not be blinded', he said

A pilot has revealed the real reason flight attendants always dim the lights on a plane for takeoff and landing.
The cabin is darkened as a safety precaution in case there is an accident, according to British pilot Patrick Smith.
'Dimming the lights allows your eyes to pre-adjust to darkness' said Mr Smith, author of Cockpit Confidential.

'So that you're not suddenly blinded if something happens and the power goes out, and you're dashing for the doors in darkness or smoke,' he told The Telegraph.
He said it also makes the emergency path-lighting and signs more visible and helps passengers maintain 'a basic sense of orientation.'
It takes about 10 minutes for the human eye to adjust to darkness, so by dimming the lights valuable time is saved in an emergency.

Another pilot, Chris Cook, confirmed lights are dimmed to allow eyes to adjust.
'Imagine being in an unfamiliar bright room filled with obstacles when someone turns off the lights and asks you to exit quickly,' he told The Sun in February.
