Mikel Agu has again been picked in the Team of the Week in Portugal

Nigerian midfielder Mikel Agu has been picked for the third time for the Team of the Week in the Portuguese top flight after his scintillating performance for Vitoria Setubal over the weekend.


The young Nigerian star was picked alongside Algeria international Yacine Brahimi of FC Porto.


"I am so excited to make the Team of the Week for the third time this season, that tells you about my hard work and trying to be the best in my position as far as Portuguese league is concerned,” said Mikel Agu, who is on a season-long loan from FC Porto.


"I thank God and my wife for being there for me, she is my source of inspiration, she inspires me a lot.

Nigeria star Ogenyi Onazi has said he is ready to mark out compatriot Emmanuel Emenike or ex-Arsenal and Manchester United star Robin van Persie when his Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor host Fenerbahce today.


Ex-Lazio star Onazi said he is ready for any task the coach will assign him for the game.


"I am battle ready for the game. It's going to be a cracker, though I don't know which role I will be asked to play in the game, if it is to mark Emenike or Van Persie, I am ready for it and any other task assigned to me by the coach,” Onazi declared.


“Victory is the most important thing for us in the game."
Trabzonspor are 11th on the table with 18 points from 15 matches, while Fenerbache are fourth on 28 points.

The Nigeria was not included among the crème of shot stoppers in the world for year 2016 by the IFFHS.


Vincent Enyeama has not been named among the top 13 goalkeepers in the world for 2016 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics.


The IFFHS world's best goalkeeper is a football award given annually since 1987 with votes cast by IFFHS's editorial staff as well as experts from different continents.


In April, the 33-year-old finished in sixth place among the top 10 goalkeepers in Europe for the 2015/16 season by the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory.


Germany’s and Bayern München’s Manuel Neuer won his fourth successive IFFHS crown as The World’s Best Goalkeeper for 2016 with a convincing victory in this year’s poll.


Neuer, on 156 points, was a comfortable 65 points ahead of runner-up Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) on 91, with Sporting Portugal and Portugal’s keeper Rui Patrizio collecting 50 to finish third.

So, this morning, I came across some news on it saying the plan is to have 16 groups of 3 teams.

So, it's one team makes it out of the group.

Now, let's imagine these teams are brought about by seeding. So the top seeded 16 teams will each make it into one of the 16 groups each.

So let's imagine the top16 qualified teams on the World Cup are:

Brazil
Chile
Belgium
Italy
England
Spain
Germany
Argentina
Uruguay
France
Netherlands
Japan
Colombia
Mexico
Portugal
Ivory Coast.....

Just imagine these 16 teams in each group, at least 10 of them are sure to qualify from their groups, so why should the other teams bother? why should analysts bother? Save for England, Ivory Coast,Portugal, Japan and maybe Mexico, which other teams will any lower seeded team say with confidence that they can beat to qualify?

Where is the fairness in such a plan?

I mean, they can flood the World Cup with quantity, but by extension, they'll be ridding it of quality

I understand your fear. Just imagine having a group like: Argentina, Nigeria and whoever. Or Germany, Nigeria and whoever, or even Brazil, Nigeria and whoever. Na die be that na.

If they want to make it 48 teams I would prefer 12 groups of 4 teams each. Here the 1st placed teams qualify automatically and the 4 best 2nd placed teams join.
With this format even if Brazil or Germany dey your group you still stand a chance of finishing among the 4 second best teams plus also you are sure to play 3 World cup matches.


People believe making 48 teams would dilute the glamour and standards of which I dnt completely agree. For eg, the following nations missed out in the last world cup: Holland, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria, Denmark, Serbia, Czech, Egypt, Senegal, S.Korea, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, Morocco, Tunisia most of which are traditional world cup teams. The inclusion of any 12 from this list would even add more competition.

However, I would still personally prefer we stay put with the 32 Team format.

I am not against the increase to 48 teams as long as substantial numbers of slots are allocated to Africa.

What I understand from the source I provided below is that the 16 countries that finish highest in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup would automatically make the group stage of the global football showcase, then the other 32 would play in a preliminary phase, in the country where the World Cup is being played . After what seems as a playoff, the 16 countries that won will qualify to play in the group stages with the other best 16 countries that finish highest in the qualifying rounds but the other 16 losers will go home. It means we continue with a normal World Cup for 32 teams, though 48 teams go to the party.


This is where I do not understand. Will they divide into 12 groups of 4 teams or 16 groups of 3 teams?

But I think FIFA wants the former because you don't expect a team to play playoff and 3 matches before proceeding to the round of 16.


Well, It depends on where we want to look at it.

Since, it is not about seeding based on the useless FIFA ranking, I will consider it.

First of all, how do they know or choose the 16 countries with the highest qualifications? That one needs to be spelt out first before I proceed. Because FIFA fit do mago mago take favor European teams.
