For me, someone has said such to me back then in tertiary institution, what came to my mind is "cud dis be luv?" why? Because, I have had many broken-heart from people whom I laid all my love on and they keep telling me that all guys are the same. If all guys are the same which I do not agree in my case, then the ladies are the cause. Ask me, how?

"I love you" vs "I'm in love with you." The former is just a normal thing I say to any human being (anyone that hasn't given me reason to question their loyalty towards me or the large society/humankind), when I say it, I mean it - here I talk about agape/selfless love. And when anyone says same towards me too, I do assume that they used it in same context like me.

However, as for the latter - ero.tic love - I reserved it for any lady that her attributes and attitudes would consume me. Any lady that would be lucky to have me utter those words to her automatically has a maga/slave in me. And if a lady says it to me, a retrospect of her actions and inaction would cause me to determine whether or not I would feel happy and reply her in same manner or kick her out of my life - on the latter in this regard, if I already know that she's a hypocrite.
