Her husband (Bill Clinton) was well liked and popular just like Obama, but his Vice President, Al Gore lost to George Bush regardless Bill Clinton's incumbency status and great economic data and prosperity under Clinton.

Same way McCain lost to Obama regardless republican incumbency and George Bush.

And for what it's worth, more Americans voted for and wanted Hilary Clinton than Trump since she accumulated 3 million more votes than Trump.
