Brigadier Mai-Malari, alerted to the presence of Major Okafor's force in his compound by Captain Oji's burst of fire dropped the telephone and, followed by his wife, was observed running into the boy's quarters. From there he escaped into the road, and it is thought, tried to make his way to the Federal Guard Barracks.According to the ORs interrogated, Major Okafor flew into a rage when he discovered that the Brigadier had escaped and bitterly blamed the men of the Federal Guard for not shooting the Brigadier when they saw him running towards the boy's quarters. He then ordered all present that the Brigadier must be shot on sight.

Major Okafor then jumped into the landrover driven by L/Cpl Noji. He informed 2/Lt Igweze that he was going to get "that man" and to arrange for more troops to come to the Brigadier's House. He drove around the area for some time but failed to find the Brigadier. By the time he returned to 11 Thompson Avenue, Major Ademoyega and Captain Adeleke had arrived there in a landrover driven by L/Cpl D. Omeru. Major Ademoyega had already informed Captain Oji that the Brigadier had been killed and that he had seen his body at the Federal Guard. Captain Oji was overheard telling Okafor that "the Jack had been killed". It is presumed that by "the Jack" Oji meant the Brigadier. Major Okafor then informed the troops with him that Brigadier Mai-Malari had been killed by men from another unit.

The time, by then, was nearly 0400 hrs. captain Oji was ordered by Major Okafor to proceed to 2nd Battalion in Ikeja to check the situation
there. The Captain left in landrover NA 773 accompanied by Sgt. H. Irundu, L/Cpl H Okeke, Pte. S. Adekunle and Pte. I Onoja.


As stated elsewhere in this report, Major Ifeajuna and his convoy, after the abduction of the PM and the Finance Minister, drove towards the Federal Guards Officers mess where he made a brief stop and then proceeded toward Ikoyi Hotel, still with the PM in the car. At a point in the Golf course, adjacent to a petrol station Brigadier Mai-Malari was walking towards Dodan Barracks when he saw Major Ifeajuna's car. The Brigadier recognized his Brigade Major Ifeajuna and shouted and beckoned him to stop. Then Ifeajuna stopped the car and accompanied by 2/Lt Ezedigbo went towards Brig. Mai-Malari and killed him.

Haba! don't you inherently mischievous folks ever get tired of telling tall tales? None of the names you mentioned above were part of the ring leaders of the Jan. 15th 1966 coup. The actual ringleaders were Major Okafor, Major Ifeajuna and Captain Oji who began hatching their dastardly plot in August 1965. In actual FACT, Major Ademoyega was the last to be recruited by the group in late October by Major Nzeogwu. The other two didn't get to know about the coup until the night of the 14th, January 1966 at the meeting held in ifeajunna's residence in Apapa.

The five Junior Officers otherwise known as The Five Majors with ImNzeogwu as their ring leader also wanted to kill Ironsi as he had killed other officers from other tribefortunately Ironsi got wind of the Coup and botched the Coup, assumed power and decreed a Unitary Constitution. What made the North angry was that after the Coup was botched Ironsi did not Court Martial the Plotters of the Coup instead the Northerners claimed he promoted the Coup Plotters. Ironsi tried to pacify the North by offering the some Northern officers key position in his office and he released some officers who had been thrown in Prison by the Five Majors.. The Northern Officers - humiliated did not care and those released from Prison planned a way to carry out a Counter Coup which was carried out in July 1966.. A very bloody Coup. The Northerners saw the January 15 Coup as an 'Igbo Coup' but in reality Nzeogwu the ring leader of those that carried out the Coup was just an Igbo in paper. Spoke Hausa fluently, dressed like an Hausa when he was not on Uniform had lot of Hausa friends.
Let this be known: Ironsi did not partake in the coup he just got the wind of it as he too would have been killed..
When the Northerners staged a Counter Coup Igbo Officers were killed in hundreds including Ironsi The Northern Officers demanded that Gowon be made Head of State although he was not the most superior officer, a Yoruba Officer - Ogundipe was but the North rejected him and made Gowon Head of State.
After the Coup, Progroms were going on in Major cities in Nigeria, Northerners and even Yorubas were killing the Igbos in large numbers.. Ojukwu, the Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria alerted Gowon. Gowon promised an end to the Progroms but it did not stop it only got worse... Ojukwu, seeing that the safety of the Igbos could not be assured declared the state of Biafra.. The rest is history

One can clearly see that the wounds of days preceding the war and after the war are yet to be healed. That's why when I see tribes insulting each other I kind of feel sorry for them..

2. Aguiyi Ironsi was theoretically to be killed by Immanuel Ifeajuna who was particularly ruthless. Why was he spared? One possible answer is that he was in on it all along. The coup plotters showed very little restraint at bloodletting on that particular night so why didnt they go after Gen. Ironsi?

3. in the aftermath of the coup Igbos in the north openly taunted their hausa counterparts. In fact, a song was made mocking the sardauna's manner of death. The aftermath of the coup was certainly much more pleasing to the Igbo part of the country than to any other.

4. In the final analysis, an Igbo dominated group of officers executed a group of non-igbo military, political and cultural leaders, to the joy and celebration of the Igbo population, culminating in the installation of an Igbo officer as president.

How was this not an Igbo coup?

4. President Nnamdi Azikwe who traveled for health reasons far overstayed the planned duration of his trip because he knew of the coup, having been warned. Yet he refused to tip-off the Prime minister, Sir Abubakar Balewa, his northern counterpart.

Achebe said that when the news of the coup started to trickle in, there was a sense of relief infact people were happy; relieved due to the corruption of the ruling class at that time no one taged it an Igbo coup but after things began to change.. It was seen as an Igbo coup because majority of those killed were Northerners. Sir Ahmadu Bello - Premier of the Northern Region and Ladoke Akintola -Premier of the Eastern Region, Tafawa Balewa - Prime Minister. It was alleged that maybe Azikiwe knew of the Coup as he extended his holiday

Igbos need not defend that coup that it wasn't an Igbo coup. If you killed the leaders of other regions and left the leaders of your own region out of the killing then there isn't any other excuse.

On top of that, ironsi was supposed to execute the coup plotters by military law but what did he do? He put them in a prison in the East and later released them.

Put your emotions aside and reason it why won't the North be angry and seek revenge.
