freshboi88:I won't blame the northern military officers who staged the 1966 counter coup that led to the ousting and killing of Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, of course coup back then are usually bloody, and the head of state rarely survives, so no complain about killing of Ironsi being the then Head of State whom they suspected was part of the first 1966 coup that led to the death of some top northern political leaders. Where I am angry with the north or northern Nigeria is in the 1966 pogrom after the counter coup, it was uncalled for! What concerns killing of ordinary Igbo civilians with what's happening in military government ![]() Northerners are so fond of this rascal behaviour of killing other Nigerian civilians once there is any national political disagreement which is why northern Nigeria is the number 1 problem of Nigeria! If you doubt me, why would Hausa/Fulani people start killing Igbos/Yorubas/Ijaws/Binis/etc living in the north after Buhari lost election in 2011 and refused to concede defeat to Goodluck Jonathan ![]() Without the 1966 pogrom against the Igbos in the north, there wouldn't have been a civil war at all! And to tell u that nature hardly forgives, especially when u refuse to accept your mistake and ask the people u offended for forgiveness, look at how the blood of innocent Benue indigenes, Jos indigenes (the hometown of Gowon), Kaduna indigenes (who carried the pogrom to the highest) and the north as a whole has been flowing since the war ended! Even when there is no official war, northern Nigeria has been fighting war within themselves for over 2 decades now and we think it's an ordinary stuff It's not, it's spiritual!Take a look at Buhari's government, even though Buhari may have good intentions to make Nigeria better, his hands are soiled from the past, and for that, things can't go well in his time because Buhari's hands smell of innocent blood: 2011, etc. Buhari needs to come out openly and cry and ask Igbos and all the families of those killed in 2011 post-election violence to forgive him in order for things to go well with him as a leader. Buhari and the north also need to beg Goodluck Jonathan to forgive them! Goodluck efforts to stop Boko Haram were sabotaged by northern elites and military officers. God is not man, we can deceive our fellow Nigerians, but we can't deceive God nor nature! |

LorDBolton:Ironsi allegedly was penned down to be killed by the coupist but was botched just the same way as Brig. Maimalari was botched by Major Okafor and Cpt Oji but record shows that okafor went looking for him. There was no record of anyone going after ironsi only for the general to later conveniently foil (sic) the coup. In fact, the Prime minister was shot dead and dump in the bush by ifeajunna and okafor after hearing that ironsi had just truncated the coup. Brigadier Mai-Malari, alerted to the presence of Major Okafor's force in his compound by Captain Oji's burst of fire dropped the telephone and, followed by his wife, was observed running into the boy's quarters. From there he escaped into the road, and it is thought, tried to make his way to the Federal Guard Barracks.According to the ORs interrogated, Major Okafor flew into a rage when he discovered that the Brigadier had escaped and bitterly blamed the men of the Federal Guard for not shooting the Brigadier when they saw him running towards the boy's quarters. He then ordered all present that the Brigadier must be shot on sight. |

T9ksy:You see your life? Thats why I said read the book. Achebe said he was not in support of Biafra but he had to do 'something'to alleviate the suffering ofghe Igbo people.. In the book, Achebe, both criticised Gowon and Ojukwu heavily for their stubborness in allowing the war to go on for a long time. Achebe blamed the people in the circle of Gowon and Ojukwu who gave them very bad advice and made them not to seek a compromise. He (Achebe) criticised Ojukwu heavily especially when Ojuwkwu refused aid from International Powers and stated times without number that he was not in support of Biafra and that he condemns violence in any way but due to the killing of the Igbos he had to atleast to help out.. He was sent by Ojukwu to many nations to plead the Biafra cause notably to Scotland.. In his book he also said that Ojukwu fought two wars: 1. For the survival of the Igbos 2. For his own survival of the leader of the Biafra people Achebe did not ever say he was in support, niether was he against it. He saw Biafra as necessary because the safety of the Igbos could no longer be guaranteed.. Read and know history, you've refused. its to display your ignorance.. There is an adage that says : He that does not know where the rain started to beat him will not know where it stoped.. funny 'cause thats what Achebe started the book with |

edudguy:What you have presented is an official account of history as told by some of those involved. But there are several reasons to advance the theory that this was indeed an igbo coup: 1. The ringleaders were majorly igbo and almost exclusively southern. Note that the Nzeogwu was a very late addition to the coup and while he seemed to have executed his role with precision and some patriotism, it is thought that his own goals may have differed from those of the original plotters. 2. Aguiyi Ironsi was theoretically to be killed by Immanuel Ifeajuna who was particularly ruthless. Why was he spared? One possible answer is that he was in on it all along. The coup plotters showed very little restraint at bloodletting on that particular night so why didnt they go after Gen. Ironsi? 3. in the aftermath of the coup Igbos in the north openly taunted their hausa counterparts. In fact, a song was made mocking the sardauna's manner of death. The aftermath of the coup was certainly much more pleasing to the Igbo part of the country than to any other. 4. President Nnamdi Azikwe who traveled for health reasons far overstayed the planned duration of his trip because he knew of the coup, having been warned. Yet he refused to tip-off the Prime minister, Sir Abubakar Balewa, his northern counterpart. 5. In the final analysis, an Igbo dominated group of officers executed a group of non-igbo military, political and cultural leaders, taking care t protect their tribesmen of similar political, military and cultural standing, much to the joy and celebration of large numbers of the Igbo population, culminating in the installation of an Igbo officer as president. How was this not an Igbo coup? |

Igbos need not defend that coup that it wasn't an Igbo coup. If you killed the leaders of other regions and left the leaders of your own region out of the killing then there isn't any other excuse. On top of that, ironsi was supposed to execute the coup plotters by military law but what did he do? He put them in a prison in the East and later released them. Put your emotions aside and reason it why won't the North be angry and seek revenge. |

SmartyPants:Forgive me if I keep on quoting Achebe's There was a Country.. Achebe said that when the news of the coup started to trickle in, there was a sense of relief infact people were happy; relieved due to the corruption of the ruling class at that time no one taged it an Igbo coup but after things began to change.. It was seen as an Igbo coup because majority of those killed were Northerners. Sir Ahmadu Bello - Premier of the Northern Region and Ladoke Akintola -Premier of the Eastern Region, Tafawa Balewa - Prime Minister. It was alleged that maybe Azikiwe knew of the Coup as he extended his holiday |

edudguy:Firstly, this quote "...even Yorubas were killing the Igbos in large numbers.." is false and an attempt to propagate the "the world against us theory" of the igbos. There was nowhere it was reported that the Yorubas killed Igbos at that time. secondly, even aside Ironsi, why did the coup plotters missed the prominent Igbo political figures of the time? Azikiwe (President), Michael Okpara (Premier) |

edudguy:So it was only the political elite of the Western ,mid- west and Northern region that was corrupt? Micheal Okpara was there they did not touch him in fact the East was as peaceful as a graveyard. We know Major Ifeajuwa was Azikiwe's cousin so he told him about the coup that was why he took a long vacation towards that period. We are not fools, blame your tribesmen for the genocide before the war in the North and the massive killing during the war. |

Go check the facts yourself.if you think they are wrong and oh please I don't like all these tribal wars on Nairaland.. don't include me in those stupid and foolish fights...But wait o you think the Easterners deserved the Progroms.. it kind of shows how shallow minded you are |
