Not taking into consideration the fact that the bible is an excellent work of literature and should be left at that, I can only mention how the ills associated with the bible and the negative impact it has on society. Why don't you tell us the benefits of reading the bible?
I really can't type much, since my fingers have a mind of their own.

Myndd please remove that Angels and Demon from the list. It's pure fiction from Da Vinci.

Here are my top 5

The Bible
Rich Dad Poor Dad
Awaken the giant within
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
The Long walk to freedom by Nelson Mandela
Dan Brown wrote Angels and Demons and not Da Vinci.

Then while the book is totally fictious, some parts of it are true which includes conclave (the way a new pope is chosen), the way the Illuminati sprung up from the hurch itself, the way the Church prosecuted scientists and branded them as heretics. Those are not loes

Sorry, Dan Brown I meant to write.

The book is highly captivating no doubt, but for me, it's not what should be on everyone's to read list in life. I took interest in it because am a Catholic and an Ex-Seminarian. If you are not a devout Catholic, you won't understand much in that book especially the conclave.

3. The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown is a Beast)

4. Things Fall Apart (This is one book that'll hold your interest by the balls)

5. The Richest Man in Babylon ( OP I don repeat this book. Nor joke with am ooo)

of course it should elude every sane human; Any book that condones genocide, slavery and doesn't punish the rape of young girls except by forcing the rapist to marry his victim should be held in contempt by anyone with even a smidgen of moral fiber.

There's no such thing. It's SUBJECTIVE. Each person's list of top 5 would differ, and can even be radically opposite.

Of what use is the bible?

For those of you who want to read the bible, let me point out some real interesting facts for your reading pleasure.

- A prophet of god had just lost his master to an unfortunate event, on his return journey, he met some little kids who started poking fun at him and calling him baldy which greatly annoyed him coupled with the earlier tragedy of losing his master, so he commanded beasts to eat them up. Every last one of them. None of them was able to escape.

- God turned a woman into a pillar of salt because she looked back at a burning city.

- A mere man beat the crap outta an angel of god such that the angel barely escaped the fight with his limbs still intact by using magic to
turn the tide.

- God murdered a man on the spot for stopping a box from falling to the ground.

- Jesus was passing by a countryside with his disciples, at that time he was so hungry therefore he stopped by a fig tree to pluck some fruits so as to combat his hunger, but unfortunately, the tree was barren. Jesus got enraged. His eyes blazed with fury. He opened his mouth and pronounced judgement on the fig tree and it died that very moment.

- A woman miraculousy got pregnant without having sexual intercourse.

And many more...
I pity you. You truly need Jesus. Surrender your life now to him

All a man needs is money and power, so, read just these two.
1) The richest man in Babylon.
2) 48 Laws of power.

Muslims likewise believe in something. They believe that they would go to a paradise where they would spend the rest of eternity enjoying all pleasures of life if only they kill non-muslims who refuse to join their religion in this world.
How about that?

There are a lot of excellent books and these things are subjective but in my view everyone should read these books before they die, or God will have some interesting questions for you

1. THE OZIDI SAGA by J P CLARK
It's amazing the number of Nigerians who have never read this book. How can you claim to love books but you've never read arguably the magnum opus? If I were to pick a book by a Nigerian author everyone should read, this is it. The perfect retelling of an African legend, our own Iliad.

2. 1984 by GEORGE ORWELL

If you want to know fear, read this book.

3. A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME by STEPHEN HAWKING

If you know nothing about science and you're looking for a book that explains in layman's terms the things that the experts say with big grammar without really explaining......this is the book for you

4. WATERSHIP DOWN by RICHARD ADAMS

Simple and effective, sometimes the best writing isn't the most complex but the one that touches you the most. You can't read this without crying once or twice

5. A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING by BILL BRYSON

From the title I think you get the general idea

P.S I wanted to include the bible, but if you don't already know you should read that then you're on a long thing
