So. Of what functions are these so called traditional rulers whether Obi's, Emirs or Oba's. Are they not part of the warped system called Nigeria, feeding fat on the ignorance of its nationals while sowing seeds of discord and divisions in a bid to enhance their fiefdoms. I have travelled widely, lived and worked all over the country in both rural and urban centres and know how much damage these folks cause to the social cohesion of Nigeria. They back the religious riots in the north, order the sacking of enemy, recalcitrant villages and territories, hide criminals from law enforcement and pevert justice. They corner developmental resources due to places and peoples under their sphere of influence and send their starved, ignorant rabid dog followers to vent their frustrations against constituted authority, 'foreigners', 'visitors', their businesses and investments. I know them, have interacted with a few and know they are no value for time, effort and money. What Nigerians particularly those at the grass roots need is education, enlightenment and empowerment. We don't need traditional institutions if we hope to unite Nigeria and develop this country. If they were a bulwark during the colonial period, now that we are a federation, an independent country, we should also be an independent minded people. Political structures should replace traditional ones completely. I don't know of any advanced democracy or developed country with multi-varied traditional institutions all working at cross purposes. How many kings can a so called people have. If I travelled to the United Kingdom and sought to live there permanently I am expected to take on the culture as espoused by the British Royal family in order to earn Her Majesty's passport. How many passports will I need in to live and work in a Nigeria with its closely guarded multi-varied cultural empires where you are a 'stranger' as my Bini friends speak of non nationals. |

Why are Nigerians hypocritical and unrealistic? Which one is higher in status, recognition, influence, riches and protocol? Would you rather be wish your son be a local traditional ruler than governor of a state (who is in a position to appoint and present staff of office) to anyone he supports? Even at national levels the most powerful traditional rulers have been sacked, banished and exiled for life by political leaders. |

hemartins:Then appoint and vote the oldest people into the highest and most influential offices of politics so that when their senile brains make mistakes we can overlook such because of respect for age. Let us start by note criticizing Buhari from now on. |

Akwaibomites generally lack respect for elders It's in UYO that I saw teenagers and young adults calling /addressing adults over 40years by name with all effontery. No qualms! Imagine a 16 year old can't even greet a 50year old woman ordinary "Good morning Ma" |

PETUK:Even if prostrating is not your culture, what about a bow? When the Prime Minister of UK greets the Queen of England, he shakes her hand and bows (bends his head downwards) at the same time. Prostrating or bowing to greet elders, traditional rulers or people holding positions of authority is not an act of worship but an act of courtesy! |
