Everyone is blinded by the so called beauty of the school that they don't see the size of the school as a challenge.
The distance one has to travel from hostel to the lecture theatres is unbelievable. No university in Nigeria is as big as this one. By the time you are done trekking and finally got to the lecture theatre, in between the lecture you will begin to doze off no matter how hard you try to fight it you most doze.

If you choose to bike up and down it won't be long your finances will run out.

So, you want a situation where the school hostel will be right beside your departmental building abi? Bro, you only criticised Great Ife for having adequate planning. In a normal school environment, the hostel shouldn't be where the theatres would be.

Sometimes cheap things can be bad things
You get into your lab ready for practical and they tell you one thing or two have finished and thus no practicals or you raise money amongst yourselves to get the reageant.

As A social entrepreneur it can be depressing
The students here have a mentality of either cheap or free ,that's why the social life is dead.
If an enterprising student wishes to bring an entertainer like Olamide, he must be wise about the timing. Many times have come when organizers clash with students because of price, the students organise themselves to forcefully enter your shows without paying a dime something happens when you organise parties.

School fees is cheap but housing is extremely expensive
Cost of housing is averagely about 5 times the cost of school fees

The cheap things we enjoy are made possible through the doggedness and the ever resilient nature of the students' union not the set of school prefects your school parades.

I have worked in two reputable Oil companies as a contract staff. These two companies didn't employ a single fresh OAU graduate. The employees were mainly made up of fresh convenant, uniben, UI and Unilag graduates. When I finally met an OAU graduate in the company he had graduated about 20 years ago.

Well u can say that again.. Though we go on strike cos we are not just some bunch of zombies going to school, we are sensitive and always concious of the need that brought up this ivory tower into place originally.. We love our school just the way it is.. We love to trek from faj hall and Akintola to Yellow house only to go and doze off there, it brings delight to us.. To start with, you have a point regarding the paucity of OAU students in the petroleum industry. OAU does not have a department of Petroleum Engineering. UI does. I think LAG has one too. so those schools have and edge in that field.

Regarding the living conditions. you're very right. Hostels are over crowded and toilets stink like hell. the hostels are practically wasting away. What the school management does is 'renopainting' and not renovation. sadly, that is true for most schools I've visited. apart from UI. I think their hostels were renovated recently. I enjoyed the few days I spent with my brother there last year


However, you are bang out of order on the other points. education is supposed to be as cheap as possible. especially in a country like ours where the majority of the population can't even afford the basic necessities of life. I paid about 20k in tuition fees throughout my stay in Ife. that's 5k per session for social sciences. I paid about 3k for accommodation at Angola and fajuyi halls. what a wow! that's how its supposed to be. Not everybody can afford to pay Princeton fees in our private universities. for your info, I paid 50 naira to watch olamide perform at amphitheatre in my final year. and it wasn't worth it. he was obviously too drunk or high to perform. Its all about value for money

Yes! OAU students/staff protest to demand for their right and that right things should be done and in most cases lead to strike. Despite the strikes I spent 6 yrs 7 mths for a six-session course which also takes an average of 6yrs 6mths in a 'strikeless' uni like unilorin.

1.Academic Calendar
OAU is constantly changing it's calendar, due to unforeseen circumstances. Fresh students that are admitted into the school today will have to wait for another whole year before they are matriculated. No student can predict their date of graduation nor matriculation in OAU unlike private universities.

2.Strikes Strikes and more strikes
OAU is the renowned king of strikes.
Everybody strikes,
ASUU AKA LECTURERS STRIKES
NASU AKA NON ACADEMICS STAFF STRIKES(, lab attendants, secretaries etc meaning no practicals , no clearances to be attended to. )
SUG AKA STUDENTS STRIKE

At the slightest provocation in this university, the next thing they resort to is strike indefinitely.

If you are looking forward to learning something part time, then this school will always create time for you to learn it in form of strikes.
Note that the average graduate will spend 5-10 years in this university irrespective if you are doing a 4 years course.

To our Nigerian kids applying for Masters and Doctoral admission in Oyinbo Universities, an advice: stop opening your letters of intent with this statement: "I graduated from the world-class University of..."

I see it all the time in your statements of intent. It's very irritating. You see, the people you are writing to/for here would rather have you stick with the facts. They'd rather not have to deal with your alternative fact claiming the existence of any world-class University in Nigeria. In fact, they know that in the entire African continent, only a handful of Universities in South Africa are qualified to use that epithet, world-class, very cautiously to describe themselves.

Graduating from a world-class University is not a precondition for admission anyway. So, why overstate your case? Just do well and try to be exceptional in your University. I did not attend any world-class University in Nigeria because there was/is none. I attended Unilorin for my BA and UI for my MA. Yet I was admitted for a PhD in one of Canada's elite Universities and won some of Canada's most prestigious doctoral scholarships throughout my studies.

Keep it real. Make your first class or your second class upper and apply. Don't claim world-class anything. There is none in Nigeria.

And if you are interested in having a world-class University in Nigeria, do two things:
