Apart from South Africa I have noticed that many Southern and Eastern African countries have have a minority white, arab or asian settlers who call these countries their home.

There are some Arab (Lebanese) naturalized Nigerians in Lagos.
Apart from that, no more.
Back those days when the economy was still OK, we used to have a large number of Indians living in Nigeria but not naturalized.
So if you come across a white fellow who tells you that s/he is a Nigerian, don't believe them!

Sure there are but they are in minority of population. Definition of Nigerian is someone who's parent or grand parents are Nigerians. Next option is being naturalized. Becoming a Nigerian means giving up other countries citezenship.

I don't know of Caucasians but any Nigerian who is not black is probably Arab (Lebanese) or Indian. They are found in Lagos or Kano and have naturalized to do businesses only Nigerians are allowed to do by law.

There are Caucasians who have naturalised after living in Nigeria for many years, and they even carry our green passport. Ever heard of Niger wives association? Members of this association are foreigners who got married to Nigerians, and ended up living in Nigeria with their families and a good number of them (not all, o) naturalised after several years. sad

Does anyone remember the late Sheila Solarin, the British wife of the late Tai Solarin of the popular Mayflower School Ikenne? She lived in Nigeria for over 50 years and was finally granted Nigerian citizenship, a few years before she died.

Sheila Solarin: A Personal Testimony | by Akin Adesokan| PM News
Sheila Solarin, co-founder of the imaginative Mayflower School at Ikenne, who passed away on 20 October 2011 at the age of 88, lived and worked in Nigeria for over 50 years..... Married to the legendary social critic, educationist and humanist, Tai Solarin, at the end of his doctorate programme in England in the late 1940s, she arrived with him in Nigeria in 1952, at the start of that incredible decade of Nigeria’s giddying race toward political independence.

Tai took up an appointment as the headmaster of Molusi College in Ijebu-Igbo, and very quickly ran afoul of the establishment there. He was a fiercely unconventional leader at a time the colonial system, though at an end, had seeded a natural deference toward authority of all sorts, and the educational system, with its traditions of inculcation, hierarchy, and formality was a bastion of conservative attitudes.....

....... The relevant point, though, is that Sheila was a person without attitudes. Which is why the issue of her long-delayed naturalisation puzzled many people. Writing about this issue in The Guardian newspaper of 30 July 2006, columnist Reuben Abati observed an extraordinary irony. Her application for citizenship was repeatedly denied at a time when Nigerians were voting with their feet, hankering after American, Canadian or European citizenships. And she was a Briton, with natural rights as a citizen there. But she kept renewing the faith, the last time being in 2002. After four years of waiting, she was eventually granted Nigerian citizenship with full rights on 25 July 2006.

Well it's all in the quote.
Imagine getting Nigeria citizenship after 50 years of residence....just b4 u die!
Those foreign wives are a different case altogether. Most times they retain their pre-marriage citizenship, & their husbands even adopt theirs. U get...marriage 4 visa!
By the way, their numbers are very low. Less than 1% of 1% of the population.
They are not naturally born Caucasian / white Nigerian citizens, which is what the topic is about. Their children will be mixed race (black / mulatto) that doesn't make them Nigerians of a different race.
All Nigerians are black. Any person of another race having Nigerian citizenship most likely has dual citizenship.

Maybe, but a good number of women who are members of the Nigerwives Association are pure Caucasians. Sheila Solarin's case was an exception and it was partly due to the fact that her husband was an activist of sorts, who had issues with almost every ruling government in power. There are other Caucasian women who got their Nigerian citizenship in 14 years or less. undecided To get Nigerian citizenship in the past, you had to renounce every other citizenship, and only hold on to your Nigerian citizenship. Dual citizenship was not allowed until Ernest Shonekan's time, when he became head of the Interim National Govt after Abacha. I need to check what the current state of the law is, on this issue.

As for Nigerian men who marry foreign women to get dual citizenship abroad (not in Nigeria), this trend became popular in the late '80s, when the devaluation of the naira started. sad It became fashionable to seek greener pastures abroad. Before then, in the '60s and '70s, most Nigerian men did not marry those foreign women to get foreign citizenship. They did so out of love. wink

A lot of those men went abroad to study, and often came back straight home after completing their course or working there, for a few years. The Naira in the '70s & early '80s, was stronger than the US dollar, and almost at par with the British pound. Jobs were waiting for well-educated graduates, and car loans were available for professionals that needed it, at a good rate. All those things have changed now. cry

However to get back to your earlier statement, getting a naturally born white Caucasian who holds Nigerian citizenship at birth, would be difficult, as Nigerian citizenship cannot be granted at birth to a person born on Nigerian soil to foreign citizens, unlike American citizenship. Your parents would have to be bonafide Nigerian citizens or naturalised Nigerians, for that to happen.
