I consider Nico Mbarga to be Nigerian (he is on my list of 150 Nigerian songs). His mother was Nigerian, he grew up in Nigeria and he was one of the early members of PMAN.

Since nobody has written about this wonderful song, I'm going to write about it.

This song takes me back to my childhood.

The song was incredibly popular in the 1970s. It's from a 1974 South African musical. They toured Nigeria many times and I think they also staged a performance at FESTAC '77.

Lots of Nigerian schools and youth groups also performed this play and these two songs were played over and over on Radio Nigeria.

I knew that I would forget something. I wrote about Celebration on my diary yesterday night while planning this thread. The DJ at the Silverbird Man Of The Year Award ceremony played both Celebration and Coffee Song and I planned to include them in the thread, only to forget at the last minute.

But I've since posted their videos on the thread.

I've often written about a trinity of African musicians. Well, maybe a quartet. These are the 4 most iconic African musicians (in no particular order).

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Manu Dibango

Miriam Makeba

Hugh Masekela.

A concert was staged at Wembley Stadium in 1988 to mark the 70th birthday of Nelson Mandela, who was still in prison at that time. The NTA showed it live. There were so many fantastic performances at that concert, but two remain etched in my mind:

Tracy Chapman performing "Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution" and this song by Hugh Masekela.

Masekela performed a duet with Miriam Makeba (who is also his ex-wife), Miriam Makeba performed Pata Pata, then Hugh performed this song (which was released just a year before the concert).

Bring back, Nelson Mandela.
Bring him back home to Soweto.
I want to see him walking down the streets of South Africa
(Tomorrow).

Bring back, Nelson Mandela,

I want to see him walking hand in hand with Winnie Mandela

There was a thread on the home page yesterday, about how difficult it is for songs from other African countries to break into the Nigerian market. This reminded me of songs from other African countries that have been hits in Nigeria. So I decided to do a list of 50 songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria.

Note (1) This is not a list of all the songs by other Africans that have been hits in Nigeria. It's just a list of 50 songs.

2) Eddy Grant is in the honourable mentions section because, although he sang about Africa and arpatheid and he often visited Nigeria, he is actually from Guyana in the Caribbeans/South America (some people think that he is Nigerian). Oliver Mutukudzi's song is also in that section because it wasn't a major hit, despite the fact that it was played a lot on the radio.

This song was on heavy rotation on NTA2 Channel 5 in the late 1980s. The group was originally known as Golden Sounds but they changed their name to Zangalewa due to the popularity of this song.

President Paul Biya made them honorary members of the Cameroonian Army and entertainers to the president.

Shakira covered this song in the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup. Her version is called Waka Waka, This Time For Africa.

So let's continue with the masters. . .the quartet of African greats. I've posted one of Masekela's songs, so now here's one from Manu Dibango.

naptu2:
This is one of the most popular and one of the most sampled African songs ever. He sued Michael Jackson and Rihanna for stealing part of the song (the part that goes "Ma ma ko, ma ma sa, ma ma makosa" ).

He had first sued Michael Jackson for stealing part of the song (which he used in "Wanna Be Starting Something" ). Michael admitted that he stole it and the case was settled out of court. Rihanna then asked Michael for permission to use that part of the song (in Please Don't Stop The Music) and Michael permitted her to use it, without first getting Dibango's permission. So Manu Dibango sued both Rihanna and Michael (again). He won.

That part of the song has been sampled by very many music acts around the world.

The word Makossa means "I dance" in the Douala language of Manu Dibango's people in Cameroun. It was popularised by Manu Dibango and is now used as the name of a genre of music from Central and West Africa.

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (1972).

grin And I remembered the song after I created the thread.

Brenda Fassie had two songs that were popular in Nigeria in the late '80s and early '90s. I included "It's Your Wedding Day" in this list, but I couldn't remember the name of the second song, so I omitted it. Then, just a few minutes ago, I caught myself humming the song.

I can't find any video or information about the song online, but I remember the lyrics very well.

Mi do do, do do, do la do ti,
Re mi do do, do do, do la do ti,

One step back and one step forward,
Just move your body,
Turn around and shake your hand,
Move your body

Thanks Naptu2. You have no idea how much this means to me...it came at a time I'm organising an African event at my institution; so I've shamelessly created a new playlist in which more than 60% of the songs are from your list. The song "Welela" brought so much memories, I almost teared up listening to it!

Thank you again. You're awesome!!! cool cool
