A Projectile is any object thrown/launched/released into space that travels along a curved/parabolic path. Keywords to note: object, thrown/launched/released, space, curved/parabolic path. Projectile begins as soon as the launcher releases the object. I love Man Utd Club under Sir Alex Ferguson for this, they made use of Projectile while playing Soccer. For instance, when Barca's Messi(who's the launcher) tips/launches(which Lehmen say it's called etisalat or messaging) & the football(object) go up(space) to fall(curved path) on front of Barca's Suarez. That's a typical Projectile, hope you got the idea now? A) Time of Flight(T): is the time required for a projectile to return to the same level from which it was projected. T= 2USin¤/g where T is time of flight in seconds; U is initial velocity in m/s, g is acceleration due to gravity in m/s'2, always constant in 9.8 or 10. projection plane. H= U'2 Sin'2¤/2g where H is the maximum height in metre, ¤ is the angle attained in degrees. C) Range(R): is the maximum horizontal displacement of the projectile motion covered in the time of flight. R= U'2 Sin2¤/g Where R is range in metre. Lets go back to the scenario above, as Messi tips the ball & it lands on Suarez's front, the time as the ball is being tipped till it lands to Suarez is the "Time of Flight(T)." The tipped ball goes up high before it lands, that highest point before it falls is the "Maximum Height(H)." Which is the vertical length. But the length where Messi tipped ball to where Suarez was, is the "Range(R)". Which is the horizontal length. Note: the maximum angle a Projectile can attain is "60 degrees," cos it travels in a curved path and not straight which is 90 degrees above. APPLICATIONS/USES OF PROJECTILES 1. 2. In Warfare: in shooting bullet, arrows, stone, bomb, etc. Eg1) A tennis ball is hit with a velocity of 3m/s at an angle of 60 degrees to the horizontal. Calculate (a) the time of flight (b) the maximum height (c) the range. Take g= 10m/s'2 Soln: U= 3m/s; ¤= 60 degrees; g= 10m/s'2. a) T= 2USin¤/g T= 2x3xsin60/10 Therefore, T= 0.52s b) H= U'2Sin'2¤/2g H= 3'2xsin60xsin60/2x10 Therefore, H= 0.338m c) R= U'2Sin2¤/g R= 3'2xsin2x60/10 = 9xsin120/10 Therefore, R= 0.779m.
