CeoNewshelm:
Nigerian Senate on Tuesday weighed the option of expelling South African companies in Nigeria over xenophobic attacks.

This is coming as Nigerians in South African are at the mercy of various attacks by the citizens who believed that Nigerian citizens have taken over many of their jobs.

Senator Olusola Adeyeye representing Osun Central constituency of Osun State gave the hint during Tuesday's plenary.

Can Nigerians do without Mtn, Dstv n shoprite? That means there'll be massive unemployment undecided

They should dialogue all these amicably simple....

Whats the result of the last dialogue? is it not the same thing that resurfaced? Why ain't their president come out boldly to persecute the perpetrators or condemn the attack. Up till now, Jacob Zuma has not said anything about it nor their house member, It means they are in support of it.

My dear, dialogue isnt going to work this time, we need serious approach for serious issues.

We will survive MTN et al. They are not the best network; they are only widely coverage and other network providers are up to the task.

Before shoprite we are surviving, now that some like it have sprang up. What make you think we will not survive it?

For DSTV, what do they offer? - Dnt wanna talk about it

Honourable Senator, why open your mouth so wide to proclaim what you can never do?

For every 1 South African you have in Nigeria, you have possibly 500 Nigerians in South Africa!

Go to the root of the problem and find a sensible solution....

South African government massivley helps South African companies to establish mega businesses in Nigeria and other places. Nigerian government has never been known to help any business, at home or abroad, so Nigerians go abroad to establish SMEs. The problem is that locals, anywhere, will frown, if you come and take their bread and buther small scale business.

Senator, if you want to fight, go and think about how FG can help businesses grow abroad (and at home).

There must be better ways of making profits than joining political parties and getting juicy appointments, or by merely becoming a senator.

Expel DSTV, MTN and Shoprite? An impossibility! That Senator is only trying to attract attention to himself. These are multi-million naira companies that pay humongous tax and other 'chargeables' to the federal government. Even at that, does the Senate have the powers to expel expatriate companies operating in Nigeria? Xenophobic attack by the country of origin of those companies on foreign nationals is not, and cannot, be a reason to expel any company operating in the country.

I almost didn't want to comment but seeing some of the comments from people with poor knowledge, I just had to say something.

Consider the following to update your thinking.

What is the one thing nations compete for worldwide, FDI.

Every country wants people with hard dollars to bring it into their country, create value and grow the economy.

Now for whatever reason, we seem to have a group of people that think that foreign investment is bad. They at the earliest provocation of any sort want to take it out on foreign investors.

For your information, if you kick out foreign investors or make life hard for them in any way, FDI will dry up and the countries economy will collapse ultimately. We are seeing this already in small degrees with international investors avoiding Nigeria due to our multiple structural issues. No FDI means no new jobs, no taxes, no value creation and stagnant economic growth.

That's why a country will fight against a court ruling that mandated it collect 13 billion euros in taxes from an international corporation. True story: http://fortune.com/2016/08/30/apple-ireland-tax-bill-noonan/

Why does dstv have near monopoly in Nigeria. Every time I come to Nigeria it feels like they never improve or get updates. Here in USA there lots of competition Spectrum tv, Verizon, Direct TV, AT&T uverse, etc.

If Nigeria wants to kick them out and let a few of these much better companies operate it's cool with me. Better yet a Nigerian business person can set up a service.

MTN and Shop rite can leave as well. If we planning to send political message. Plenty of super market and phone companies exist domesticly and abroad to fill void. If laws are tweaked to be more friendly who wouldn't want to service 190 million population.

No body will lose any job, u sack the south africans an appoint a new head controlling the business, the business name can be changed from e.g dstv to any other company name ,and staffs will retain their poition
Re: Nigerian Senate May Expel DSTV, MTN, Shoprite Over Xenophobic Attacks by MrMaestro: 4:09pm On Feb 28, 2017
I am 100% in agreement with this. People saying jobs will be lost need to realize that these companies can be expelled WHILE ALSO nationalizing these companies until they can hand it off to a Nigerian buyer. MTN would be relatively easy since we have Glo. The government can collaborate with glo to transfer all of the customers and business operations of MTN to Glo. For shoprite or DsTV, they too can be nationalized or sold at a discount to a local company looking to expand. I don't know why people act like Nigerians aren't the most hard working and resourceful entrepreneurs in Africa. If given a chance we can create and sustain large companies. We don't need ANYONE, all these companies need US. They make BILLIONS off of Nigeria alone, we make up 30% if not more of their business revenue. We were fine before them, we'll be fine without them. Don't forget that

Is like u don't know the country u are from. The day they expel these SA companies, that very day u will see buyers for their facilities. I trust Nigeria billionaires.
As big as ExxonMobil, a Nigeria company bought all their facilities in down stream sector. So seeing buyers for Mtn, shoprite and dstv shouldn't be a problem for Nigeria.

do you know how many telecoms operator thayt will rush to nigeria with immediate alacrity if useless mtn leaves?

The reason more people are not coming in self is because this useless mtn has monopolised everything.

They should chase them away for glo to rule jor

How do you nationalise DSTV? A company that beams its programmes from South Africa? Would Nigeria nationalise a satellite that is wholly owned by a SAF company?

let me tell you what i think if mtn go today Adenuga(glo) will be very much happy to take over their customers and thats a plus for the company,on the other hand Dangote is another man that will be ready to take over shoprite and believe me the man can do better cos this man even ready to buy Nigeria if its for sale, and lastly Ifeanyi Ubah will most likely take over Dstv cos the guy have passion for such a thing and beside it can be a major weapon for him to showcase his fc to the world..all they'll need is just renaming.....Those SA fellas are bastard

You nationalize the vacuum that DsTV would leave. Do you know how many satellite tv operators there are in the US and UK? It's not rocket science. Or have you forgotten that Nigeria was the FIRST in all of Africa to have broadcast television? Why are you people acting like we need these companies? We really don't. And the fact that S.A president isn't responding to this matter is even more proof that they don't care about Nigerians being killed, they only value our business, and our money. Why any self loving Nigerian would defend S.A. in this situation makes no sense whatsoever.

All these selfish self centred lot. If they send away the SA businesses it won't affect them one bit. The poor masses will suffer greatly while they still get paid fat sums by just sitting on their butts and saying 'Ayes' and 'Nays'.
Sending away MTN, DSTV and SHOPRITE won't change much rather it will increase unemployment in a recession striken country. They should figure out another means to fix it. That is why they get paid I suppose.
