Soon as you tell me which Nigerian language is as internationally accepted and used like the English language.
Some things are just so simple to comprehend and flow with, but people like you must find a way to excuse the very glaringly inexcusable

Just like this one below.

Marty2020:
Most times, its not all about speaking English, can you write it down? can you explain the words that are been pronounced? do you have anything upstairs? can the English feed you, cus they are people who can't speak but they do better than the so call grammerians?

They must justify illiteracy and at the same time call others illiterates.

grin grin grin

Keep justifying nonsense. When you get to a job or visa interview, feel free to express yourself in your native dialect.
That is if I am interested in their visa or any job interview.

The standard of education was ''murdered'' immediately our leaders began demeaning teachers and ignoring their welfare, and leaving schools dilapidated. Brilliant teachers fled the system and were replaced with Youth corpers. Much as I agree to the fact that ''some of our yesterday-graduates ''murder English'', as in, not knowing how to use ''its and It's'', ''ask and axe'', I'm and Am'' etc., but not all Nigerians comit these blunders. However, the news in the media which suggest that Nigerians are the most educated blacks in America contradicts the claim that ''Nigerians are illiterates''.

Then stop abusing their language. Leave the hell their language alone and speak your indigenous language instead.

-Good observation from that woman.

-But the one that rattles me and make my skin crawl is when the so-called Nigerian graduates and undergraduates, needlessly use "text language" in simple communication.

-For instance, "KK" for Okay/Ok., "Gud" for Good, "Kul" for Cool.

I have tried to no avail to get rid of this from those I know, but as you would expect they get upset and probably think you're questioning their intelligence, or the retort: "English is not my mother tongue". grin

I'm team indigenous language anytime, any day! Develop our language or atleast modify English to suit us, just like Americans did, else we will continue to be laughed at and ridiculed.

-The danger of those silly usage when it becomes ones culture is enormous, as it can cost you job interviews, contracts, respect e.t.c.

Note: This is one of the things highlighted to be holding African-Americans behind in USA, among other sub-cultures they practice.

-Anyone seen the book "Black Redneck, White Liberals" by Thomas Sowell?

Does spoken English makes one illiterate? So what about those that can speak Correct English but can't speak their language?

#Its all about communication, if you can hear and understand me, then its OK.
It is not OK because it is a product of laziness that started with textspeak.

If the users can limit it to texting where it originated from, it could be overlooked but you see people using them in official documents or even in exam scripts.
Too bad!

We need to define illiteracy first, it really has nothing to do with the way or how anyone speaks a language.

It has to do more with an ability to READ, and not necessarily in ENGLISH.

Like a poster said, which of the Nigerian languages can the Americana read or speak.

Let's stop fooling ourselves. It's absolutely wrong to start a sentence with "am" but it shouldn't be used as a criteria to judge Nigerians as illiterates.

I'm open to critics though
a criterion

Op, listen, I have been with most Americans who cannot even write their names or speak good English language. Have been in a bank with an American of about 20 yrs old who wanted to cash his check and what he did was to ask me to help him write his name on the back of his check leave which was to endorse the check to enable him cash his payroll. After doing that for him, he then had to thumbprint at the back to enable him cash his payroll.

Your can only condemn our ascent when in America and not to condemn the so called English language.Queen English is been respected and what you mostly get in America is just street language, just like our pidgin English language which is common in places like Warri. That is why you cannot cheat any Warri old woman with your grammar.

So op, do not just start what you cannot finish. Let the so called American stand with a person like Ngozi Okonjo, Pat Utomi and other educated Nigerians in order to buttress her point.Nonsense.
