You're the one that is not making sense. If your car was smuggled across the border, you cheated the government of customs duties. Nobody is even arresting you for smuggling, they're saying give us our money and we'll forget that you smuggled the car and you're still here complaining.
Nonsense!!!

So you agree it is right for them to go around asking for customs' papers for cars that have been duly registered with Nigerian numbers? What stops them from ensuring such cars can't be registered without proper customs' papers. Once a car is duly registered I don't see why anyone should demand people show customs' paper again, it is preposterous.

No custom officer stand in the middle of the road or check already registered vehicle for custom duties in the west.Custom should protect the border amd if cars get fru then at point of registration there should be custom clearance b4 you get the car registered .

I think its customs that failed to do their duties. They secure the boarders, don't they? Were they drinking garri when they were beaten to it?

Nigerian government has a way of punishing the citizens for her (government's) ineptitude e.g Roads are bad, and government rather than fix them choses to arrest one-way offenders, robbers rob at night and instead of providing adequate security, government decides to ban night travels. What a country??

I think the most important response is for custom to reduce their custom import dues... It's way too expensive... Let the Senate rather see to that... Let the dues be slashed by 70%

WHY, I THINK IT SHOULD BE INCREASE, MAY BE THEN NIGERIANS APPETITE FOR FOREIGN GOODS WILL REDUCE

So what happens to the thousands that already have Nigerian numbers but without customs papers? We allow them continue cheating the FG of duties?
Besides the whole essence of this thing is to make smuggling unattractive. If a smuggler knows that even if he brings in a smuggled car successfully across the border, the customs will still make sure he pays duties, he won't even bother with the risk. Is it not stupid to give someone N20,000 to smuggle a car from Cotonou to Lagos when the customs will still nab you for unpaid customs duties?

The question is how did they get registered? Who registered them? Ask relevant question and punish those who allowed that to happen to forestall future occurrence.
The vehicles that have been registered are assumed to have customs' papers. Registration shouldn't be possible without those papers. You want a person who bought and registered his cars years ago to start looking for papers he has long misplaced? Is he suppose to carry those papers in his vehicle after registration? Are the paper renewable? If not why do you think they are not? Because once registration is complete, they are no longer relevant. The whole customs' papers talk for registered cars is illogical, senseless and absurd.
Customs' people are meant to man boarders and prevent smuggling, they are not police, vio or road safety guys and shouldn't constitute another set of headache for motor owners like police and others mentioned have already constituted.

I bet you the guy doesn't know anything about car registration processes, that was why he's saying this. Why carrying custom papers of 5, 6, 7 years ago after registering your car?
Customs just want to inflict another hardship on innocent citizens. Let them secure borders very well and stop harassing innocent car owners who know not how the cars are being smuggled.

They should scrap the move completely.

They want to create an avenue for Customs, Police, VIO, Task Force, Road Safety etcetera to continue to terrorize citizens and levy them anyhow.

I cannot understand why we want to continue to give the impression that Nigeria is a zoo!

It is unheard of, anywhere in the world that Customs will be asking for duty after cargoes have been released by same Customs! Let us call it what it is - Senseless.

Every uniformed body wants to be on the road! How lucrative?

So before you travel 30 minutes you would have been stopped and checked 5 times by agencies, and now Customs too!

How lucrative?

You failed to do your duties at the border (which you are being paid for with tax payers money) and you want to punish the citizens for your ineptitude.

And why should the citizen buy something illegal? So if NDLEA see you with drugs they should let you know since it came in through the airport?

Re: BREAKING: Senate Stops Nigerian Customs Vehicle Duty Ultimatum by touche(m): 2:35pm On Mar 07, 2017
1. Nigeria Customs is an enforcement agency under the Ministry of Finance.

2. Nigeria Customs has no input in government fiscal policy. They merely implement circulars issued by Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment, Presidency, etc.

3. Even US Customs cannot enforce 100% border protection. There is absolutely nothing wrong with multiple checks i.e. if the vehicles are smuggled past Customs, revenue can still be collected at registration point.

Let's look at issues without sentiments, the aim is to generate revenue for the federal government. If the vehicles are smuggled past the borders, what's wrong with duty collection at registration point?

Mr man, where were they when these vehicles were being brought into the country. They should review the process and not hammer on those that have the vehicles already.
