the term SF (special forces) is used to designate specialized units of the army the term SOF (special operation forces) is used to designate specialized units of the army, air force , navy, paramilitary, intelligence organizations, police etc both SF and SOF can be used interchangeably, what only differs is the command chain / under whose operational jurisdiction they fall. SF and SOF designation in the real world mean nothing other than the fact that it helps to simplify the command and control hierarchy with the added benefit of creating a single point source which allows to overcome the normal bureaucratic hurdles when it comes to weapon/asset acquisition and resources for quick time deployment etc etc. in short cut down time and unnecessary red tape with greater organization control being delegated to the SF/SOF commanders so that they can serve their purpose with with very high efficiency and bare minimum time (quick response force). regular infantry units also have specialized troops embedded with them who r trained in many aspects of the special forces , they can/also carry out ops which fall under the purview of special forces, however these specialized infantry troopers r not designated as special forces but termed as 'shock troopers'(but some countries designate them as SF or we wrongly infer them as SF and which is why some/many of us get confused). if we go to the very basic/generic meaning of special forces , then its definition would be "soldiers who operate behind enemy lines without any support" note : these r my personal views which need not be correct , as every country follows different rules , rest is on the readers here to decide , i am comfy even if somebody disagrees |

NAF ESTABLISHES COMBAT SEARCH AND RESCUE UNIT IN PLATEAU STATE As part of the renewed commitment to evolve robust security architecture capable of rapid employment in all spectra of warfare, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today hit the ground running for the establishment of a new specialised unit in Kerang, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The new unit, 205 Combat Search and Rescue Group (CSARG), comes under the Special Operations Command. It is intended to shorten NAF’s response time and improve search and rescue efforts of troops in crisis areas within the country. “The new unit is one of the nine specialised units under SOC set up to address the current security challenges facing our nation”, said the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar. He disclosed that 205 CSARG will incorporate hospital and schools for the benefit of NAF personnel, their dependents and civilian population within the area. Air Mshl Abubakar reiterated the commitment of the NAF to protect lives and property in the State in partnership with other security agencies. Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the ground breaking ceremony, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Rt Hon Simon Bako Lalong commended the NAF for its role in combating insurgency and terrorism in the country; adding that the occasion is one of the many remarkable strides by the Nigerian Air Force in repositioning itself into a professional and disciplined force. Gov Lalong described the event as “a landmark achievement by the NAF that will forever remain indelible in the hearts of Nigerians and most especially the good people of Plateau State”. |

The new unit, 205 Combat Search and Rescue Group (CSARG), comes under the Special Operations Command. Units operating under a military Special Operations Command will have their boots called special operations forces. These guys are obviously SF guys. |

jln115:Naval infantry for your MRS. I don't know the job roles or training of the others. Military intelligence is not SF. Like I've stated countless times, there is nothing like SOF and SF. There is just SF. Those titles are used interchangeably to mean the same thing. |

Henry240:There are units supporting SF units in certain ops with personnel whom have passed the SF selection course but didn't continue the training cycle. Special operations forces are mostly used for the supporting other units during ops. Not all members of such units are equally trained. Just like SA military health service's 7 medical battalion some of it's members are not SF qualified. |

MikeCZA:I don't know if I'm supposed to repeat myself at every turn. SOF does not exist. As the term SOF is the exact same thing as SF. Because you have received additional training in some sort of speciality does not necessarily make you an SOF. You're just a more mobile infantry or a Quick Reaction Unit. Your MRS is nothing more than a Naval Infantry. If this was the case, every Naval infantryman in the Nigerian navy would be referred to as some special super duper soldier. |

Henry240:Henry240, I think at times it's best you keep quiet. You keep embarrassing yourself with every post you make for your lack of proper info. You're the only person who would argue with guys who are either in the military or were in the military. For a "regular Joe", you're very opinionated. |

ActivateKruger:It doesn't help when your military men don't know what they are talking about and require schooling from a civilian. When they are largely ignorant. I find that to be quite problematic. |

TrueHeart365:it is kind of debatable if we were to factor in the time period ancient evidences refer to usage of specialized units for special purposes other than conventional warfare i have come across references in china india japan European countries etc infact there r references to dedicated psy ops units in ancient times. British WW2 'behind the enemy line' forces were not termed as SF but were rather referred to as 'commandos' musing a little here ![]() personally i was involved in a sister organization which was handed the task to research into over 1000 + year old ancient war fighting strategies , formations, techniques involved in logistics etc etc. one unique thing which caught our eyes was that in the manuscripts we went through we came across descriptions of special 'shoes' which were designed to increase endurance of foot soldiers encumbered with heavy loads not thinkable even with the fittest modern soldiers. hell! 3 soldiers would barely get the job done. based on the info which we could decipher we tried to replicate , but were only partially successful , that was 3 years ago , i left for different company/org so dont know what happened . compartmentalization is implemented very strictly so chance r slim that i would ever get to know about it. PS : the military formations used in ancient time as described in the manuscripts were found to be better/efficient than some of those used in the modern times , lets say these were implemented to good effect with necessary modifications and validated in war room gaming simulations and later corps level military exercises . old is gold after all ![]() |
