Is There Anything Like "Grinded Pepper" ? by bongolistik(m): 1:47pm On Mar 09, 2017
It is not uncommon in Nigeria to hear people mention "grinded pepper", go and buy pepper for me; and when the person being sent demands to know the type of pepper he/she is to buy, the next thing you will hear from the sender is "grinded pepper". Now I ask again, is there really anything like "grinded" in the English word that comes out from grind. Is the past tense and past participle of grind not ground?

Then why say grinded pepper? Many if not all Nigerians are guilty of this one. What happens if you say "ground pepper"..

Are you also guilty or what's your thought?

Are you sure Nigerians only use it in pidgin, because what actually drew my attention now was the cook teacher on TV talking about adding "grinded pepper" to the food to be cooked

I tried it once in the market, I said the madam should give me ground pepper. She just kept saying "hen?" until I 'corrected' myself and told her "grinded pepper".
I think the key is, When in Rome, behave like the Romans...

Behaving like Roman when you are in Rome is not the problem as long as you know the right thing but you are only trying to adjust to the Roman pattern. It becomes a problem only when you don't even know the right thing or you think that what you are using is actually right word.

'Grinded' is a verb, so it doesn't apply here.

The preceding word to 'pepper' here has to be 'ground' which is an adjective.

An 'adjective' you meant, dear friend.
