Yes, if you have the public health degree already.

If you don't, why not just go get your medicine straight up

Sorry I saw this late.

Please look at my answer to a related question at the previous page. Less emphasis on the sexual health aspect and more emphasis on population control, disease triad, management, control, probability and statistics

To those interested. The screening comprised of test and interview. The test was 32 MCQs (30mins). Basic questions on public health, nutrients, breastfeeding and pregnancy, diseases etc. Then the interview was conducted immediately after and it was similar to a job interview. cc etinosajay
I Wish everyone the very best

. Sorry I'm just seeing this. I don't know much about Uniport admissions. I'll ask some of my friends there and get back to you. Compliment of the season.

Hello everyone. Compliment of the season. Good to be here.
Is anyone aware of an online PGD in public health research being offered by James Lind institute? Has anyone taken any of the online courses before? What do you think about it?

That's an amazing field of study. In public health there's great demand for researchers, data analysts, statisticians and people who can efficiently carry out field research involving population and household studies.

Those in the field of monitoring, evaluation, measurement and learning are usually statisticians, skilled in the field of population studies, demography and development studies.

There are other disciplines that are beneficial to public health practitioners, such fields are Gender Studies, Development Studies, Health Planning & Management, Health Economics the list is endless.

You can become a specialist in data collection, mapping and designing of data analysis tools for field based research surveys.

When public health practitioners in NGOs want to measure the level of impact their health projects have in addressing it's intervention strategies, they call in researchers who are in the discipline you mentioned.

So if that's where your interest lies, then carry on.

my first degree is health education, I was offered straight MSC in public health. what aspect would be OK for me to venture into

Hi everyone.
Thanks for this thread I've really learned a lot. My own inquiry is this, I've just gotten admission into UI for MPH in Population and Reproductive Health nutrition and I have a BSc in biochemistry. Please am I going in the wrong direction? If I am is there anyway I can switch streams because I'm trying to be realistic about my career prospects in this country of ours. Is this my chosen stream feasible for a career in Nigeria? Although I'm also open to international opportunities.
Secondly I heard volunteering is one way to gain experience as experience is very important in this field of ours. Please can anyone recommend any NGOs or health bodies in Ibadan I can volunteer for maybe during holidays or weekends? And for those who are already studying for their MPH, would I even have time to volunteer, cos I don't want my studies to be adversely affected.
Thank you very much

Your greatest challenge may depend on your background and interests. Some of the courses you will take are quantitative, so if you don't like figures, this may be challenging. However, if u are the type that likes calculation, courses where numerous notes will be given may also be challenging. So to do well on an MPH program, both sides must be balanced.

Congratulations on your admission. I don't think you are on a wrong path provided you are keenly interested in the program you have applied for. I am sure you won't be able to volunteer with any NGO in your first academic session because of the several courses you will take. Some of these courses are very quantitative you will need extra study period to score high marks. By the time you start the program fully you will know some places in Ibadan where you can volunteer. Wish you the very best.

Really wonderful thread @Etinosajay. God bless you for providing such wealth of information.

I'm a biochemistry graduate (UI), just finished my youth service. Looking to come in for public health in UI. Was wondering if there's any advice you can give me.
Application requirements, deadline, tuition fees, other fees, recommended stream.. anything..
Once again God bless you for the info.

Let me just contribute a bit to this since I'm currently in the system.
Requirements: I think with a 2.2, you're good to go. However, a few departments request that you've a few years of experience and the competition might work against those with low grades.
Just visit the PG school website of UI and download the brochure for those that are currently in session to have the ideas of the basic requirements.
Deadline: Deadline for application is usually about 2 months or so with additional weeks for late application.
Tuition fees: For MPH, Tuition fees differ based on the department. For the newly admitted students, the least is 170+ while the highest is 230+. You'll also have to pay other fees which I think 50k should be able to take care of.
Recommended stream: There are so many good streams under MPH. The best thing is for you to download the brochure and check out the courses on offer.
I hope this helps.

hello everyone. Thanks etinosajay for creating this thread. Actually, I'm currently in a fix.. and very confused. I'm a 100lv student of public health in a Nigerian university. My people dont really know much about this course and want me to switch to something 'higher', something that at least I'd be able to either get a job or have something of my own. Mom wanted medicine. I once had the zeal for medicine but along the line it faded and I'm currently in public health. i love this course and i dont want to switch but majority keep telling me that its not even better than microbiology. and that even microbiology is better

please anyone in the house, i need a reply soon. Public health is what i want to do but i want to know if its the best choice for me. i dont want to be stranded and unemployed when the time comes for me to give back.

please please please
