Three days ago, I saw Kalu, Simon and Rabiu played in the Europa against Genk. I was not impressed with Gent style of play. They were too rigid and too couscous. Maybe that limited and reduced the abilities of almost all their players to mediocre. And it really affected our Nigerian players. Kalu and Simon played as RWB and LWB respectively in a 3-5-2 formation while Rabiu played in the Middle. So, both Kalu and Simon were cautious of defending duties to adventure to the attacking position. Some how, they pick up in the second half after the boring first half. That was when I noticed the coach lapses by not allowing his players to express themselves. They team showed great passing skills and dribbles. However, I will narrow my assessment to our naija boys. Rabiu Ibrahim: This boy has added aggressiveness and physically to his sleek kind of play. This boy is very skillful with all his moves, touches, dribbles and passes. As in you can't what he is going to do next with the ball. He plays exactly like Jay Jay Okocha but unfortunately players like him can't succeed in this era where emphasis are more on speed and tactics than the former days of Ronaldinho and Co. He can only thrive in a team in the Spanish league. The only floors I saw in his game are, he doesn't demand for the ball and he doesn't when to make a pass. He looks raw. I think more playing time will improve his game. Samuel Kalu: I think the formation reduced his ability. He is very skilful and he always wanted to take a shot at goal (unnecessarily). After dribbling, he seems not to know what to do with his final decision. Meaning his final decisions are very poor. Lost the ball unnecessary many times before he finally got his act right with a pass that led to the only goal of the match. Simon Moses: As a LWB in a 3-5-2 formation, his ability was also limited. He ventured to the front in the first half but I can't really notice him in the second half. Though, he could have seen his free kicks and corners convert if the strikers were not wasteful. I think accurate delivery of crosses his a plus to him but I was not impressed with his game holistically. |

jotey:Sheyi Ojo was playing in the Championship with Wolves before he was recalled from loan to play in Premier-league last season. This season, he was a sure banker to make the team before injury blighted his season. All the players I mentioned are not Academy players. Sheyi and Ovie are considered Liverpool first team players before injuries came their ways. Which one is academy player on my list? |
